Has anyone else had this experience with TTN 3.03 Question

I've made a couple of journeys recently where TTN sends you to your destination with one route but on the return journey it sends you on a different route ( start and destination are the same only reversed) i.e Keynsham (Bristol) to Studland Bay (Dorset) outward journey is down the A37 through Yeovil to Dorchester to Wareham to Corfe to Studland. On the Return journey it sends you from Studland to Corfe to Wareham to Blandford to Shaftsbury to Warminster to Bath then Home. Very Strange.

I haven't quite had this but TT Nav 3 is a strange beast.

For instance there are two main obvious ways to leave the estate where I live - one east and one west. It annoyers me that TT always makes me go west when it is obvious that you would want the eastern exit for an east or south bound journey. So I thought I make a avoidance area to force it east. Would it have it; no TT decided to make a considerable northerly detour through another estate. If I block off all the exits bar one. then TT simply ignores the last avoidance zone. It will not travel along a certain bit of road.

But there are lots of these situations, particularly where you've been travelling a route for years only to be affronted by the way TT doesn't choose it. So then you think I'll make TT choose my route to see what difference in time there will be. So you add a couple of avoidance zones to persuade it your way only to find it goes miles out of the way and you can never persuade it down your route.

Hence I could quite believe it going one way there and one way home

There's a section of the A69 that's like that where westbound it's navigable, eastbound not, so TomTom3 sends you along some exceptionally narrow lanes to avoid the 250 meters of road that it thinks is impassable.

tc tt dosnt make go you go the orkward way you chose to listen to tt and go the orkward way if you do know better somtimes local knowledge will beat tt ive had it a few times where tt wants me to go one way but i know theres a problem with the way tt wants me to go ie low bridge weight limit so just use my own way and it stil gets me there

TT is sometimes VERY weird.

On way home from work I drop my pal off in Kelty (Fife) and head over to Glenrothes (Fife). Now, even though it would take me what is the quickest and shortest route to Kelty it often takes me a different route home (through Scotlandwell). I know better so I continue the quickest way. As I pass the junction that TT wanted me to take I make a note of the ETA and miles remaining. Once Im passed the junction by about 200 yrds and it has recalculated using "my" route both the ETA and Miles remaining are much lower than its chosen route. WHY

Dont get me wrong, Its a brilliant peice of software but it has got to be used with common sense, local knowledge and observation on the screen as a junction may of changed or not be included in the map yet.

I drive to mobile phones sites that are often off road and it has got me to every single one so far ( I have a POI file with said sites). Even the ones off the road it will take me to the nearest road which sometimes isnt always the one that access if of but its close enough. Sometimes the access track is on TT as an un-named road so cant complain there!

Just installed TT Traffic but the jury is out in that one just now...........

Try setting route calculation to "strict" in properties. This does a more thourough calculation, checks more roads and should provide better routes. Wink

I have experienced the phenomenon of different routes in different directions and believe it is related to the routing algorithm making "best guesses" about routes in order to serve up a reasonable route as quickly as possible.

For example, routing from the Midlands to Kent takes me to the M1 and around the M25 to the Dartford Bridge. The return journey goes up the M11 and along the A14.

Without the "strict" routing option that makes TT look at more roads and takes longer, I think TT takes a stab at a route and if it looks OK doesn't bother looking at routes that appear to be going out of your way.

So, in my example as Kent is South of the Midlands it looks at roads that take you South, i.e the M1. It finds a route using the M25 which it thinks will be nice and quick. It doesn't bother trying routes using the A14 as that heads East to start off with. It's like the routing has blinkers on and only looks directly towards the destination plus-or-minus a few degrees.

Then on the way back we are heading North and the M11 goes North from the M25 before you get to the M1, so TT tries a route using the M11 and finds it can use the A14 to get home quite quickly. So it has a route that it thinks is unlikely to be beaten by going further West around the M25.

The alternatives would seem to be to enable "strict" routing that will presumably try a wider "angle of attack", but it may still miss a route that would require you start by heading away from where you want to go, ou using the itenary feature to break the route up into smaller, more straightforward chunks. I use the latter to partially resolve the issue of the missing M6 Toll Road by adding a drive by on the M6 at Junction 4 and ignoring instructions until I'm on the M42 North. (Although I know the way I still use navigation for things like arrival times and traffic.)

Personally, I think Jane has got PMT. When I ask for a route to Blandford from Barnstaple she normally takes me via Yeovil and Dorchester, actually a very good route that I had never tried before I met Jane. This week she wanted me to go via Honiton and the A35 coast road which is much longer and slower. On the way back she insisted that I go another way entirely, via Sturminster Newton and Yeovil! Even with 'Strict' enabled it'll still sometimes give different routes on the same journey in different directions. I regularly travel from Essex to a friend in darkest Sussex. On the way down it takes me by what is (according to my friend) the optimum route. However, on the return journey it wants me to travel the first 5 miles along the narrowest, widiest country lanes.

Now I know which instruction to ignore I can go past and it re-routes me to the correct route.

I've noticed that these discrepancies often involve very small differences to the travel time. It may be that it's as something stupid as whether you take the first or third exit from a roundabout. A right turn on a roundabout will add another couple of seconds more than a left turn on the return route.

This could be helped if TomTom would introduce a 'Preferred' route option. Where I could tell it that I don't mind taking an extra minute on my journey if it cuts 2 miles off the distance.
