Western Europe maps. Major routes only ?????

Hi Folks
In may this year i will be hiring a car in Lisbon Portugal for 10 days.
I have an Iphone and also a Mitec Mio with TOM TOM navigator 5 on it but only UK AND IRELAND what it the best option.

Can i get an upgrade to western europe for the Mio that has navigator 5 on it ?

Should i just start from scratch and get something for the iphone?

What does it mean on the TOM TOM maps for western europe "major routes only" as i mainly need it for driving around the city of Lisbon

TomTom Nav5 is rather old these days and the maps will be rather dated, as for getting newer maps to work with TTN5 thats going to be rather difficult.
UK&ROI_plus_Major_roads_of_Europe means the map folder contains detailed mapping of the UK&ROI and major roads such as Motorways and A class roads while on mainland Europe, it probably won't have detailed coverage of anything off the main roads though.

To be honest I would look at the iPhone apps that are available but you will need a minimum of a car charger cable otherwise the battery in the phone will go flat very quickly. One thing to be wary of are apps that use off-board mapping as these download the map to the device while in use and while abroad this can prove very costly.
Most of the decent apps have the maps stored ont he iPhone and will work quite happily with the data connection disabled (to avoid a costly phone bill when you get back to the UK) - Mike
