The Tomtom doesn't have a 4GB card as listed on tomtom.com. The 2GB card is NOT big enough to fit the latest maps and only just fits the maps already on the device. There is no room to fit any extras. Barely enough even to fit current fuel prices etc. The problems start when you try to download the promised latest map update: it is 1859 MB. There are 127 MB of stuff visible on the device not including the map, but there is a further 21 MB of stuff you can't see or access. The updated map doesn't fit.
Basically you need to buy a MicroSD card to make this work with the latest maps. The only alternative is to accept reduced functionality. Tomtom tell me their latest map is delivered in chunks so you can keep only some chunks on your computer, and download them as you need. Or you could delete postcode search or have no voice instructions.
I am appalled that Tomtom sell the device like this. I spent three or four hours trying to fix the issue with the help of their website (since phone support is only available in office hours), and then 45 minutes on the phone to their customer service centre to establish the above. But I have no faith at all that the website will be updated anytime soon. They've known for a long time about the 4GB mistake on their website and not updated the error.
I've spoken to Consumer Direct who will take the matter up through Trading Standards, since I was wholy dissatisfied with Tomtom's response. Frankly I've just decided Tomtom is not the company I wish to do business with.
If you buy the device after reading this please buy a memory card. Tomtom customer service tell me it takes up to a 4GB microSD card (Actually at first they said it could take 32 GB but I asked them to check and then said 4GB!). The customer service rep claimed the device would work just as fast from maps o n a card as from the internal memory. But I'd buy from another manufacturer. I've never experienced service like this from any company - not even British Gas in the old days!

The device can use any capacity of MicroSD card up to and including 32GB, although why you would need much larger than 4GB is debatable as the x50 units have no mp3 player so the card is only used for map folders. If you do go for a memory card get a fast one from a reputable source (NOT E-Bay), SDHC cards have a Class number which denotes the speed, the lower the number the slower the card, I always try to use Class 6 cards with my units - Mike

Have a look at the other thread on this for how to make it all work. TomTom basically got caught with a decision made a while ago, and in expanding their country range. It's poor, but there is a solution.

Thanks for your help so far. If you happen to know where a good solution is posted please can you give the link? The only solution I've seen suggested on the forum involved deleting cspeech files for other countries. My version doesn't have any except one for GB and a (tiny) one for Ireland. No good, I'm afraid.
I think the only solution is to use a microSD card or accept reduced functionality, or stick with an old map and no added files at all. That was what TT custoemr support said.
I'm utterly irritated with Tomtom. It is a shame because my previous Go was fabulous.
For prospective purchasers, the speaker on the Go 750 isn't as good as that on the early Go. Andthe Duragadget Eva hard case I have seen highly recommended doesn't fit the screen well.

I can see why you're annoyed and TomTom were surely short-sighted in putting such a small amount of internal memory in their devices, but on the plus side for a small one-time outlay of £5-£8 on a 4GB MicroSDHC card you also now get Turkey and Greece included with your maps for free and you could keep the whole lot on your device. This is the way I have had my maps for a while now and it's by far the most painless solution.

It was inevitable that eventually European mapping would out-grow the internal memory. Given how cheap they are and given the mistakes on their website, TomTom should probably allow unit owners to claim a free 4GB MicroSD card from them or they should refund any Map Update customers not happy with the solution of breaking the maps up into swappable chunks - a pretty useless solution if you need to travel from Western to Eastern Europe.

Thanks. The linked discussion is very helpful, though hopefuly this thread will help others navigate to it. I had looked with the search function and missed or I'd not have bought a 750, which i s clearly a pretty flawed piece of kit.
If I understand the consensus on the linked thread correctly I was right in thinking I basically need a microSD card as the best solution to getting my device to function with an updated map - but the process of getting it to work is less straightforward than I had hoped.....
I will try this evening!
Thanks, Ben

I fitted the microSd card, and the maps downloaded onto it. I'm not entirely sure what is on the internal memory and what is on the card - but it just worked! No specialist knowledge needed. So it seems the Go 750 Live may be OK. If you buy an expansion card. For info I didn't manage to get one that stated its category or speed, but a 4GB SDHC one from Staples @ £12. It seems to work fast.
