About to do my update but would be grateful for some clarification from the experts first. Hopefully I will be able to save my mapsettings.cfg file by following the advice here but I am a little confused about what it contains.
I know it has the Favorites - don't use them, only POIs - and recent destinations - not too worried about that - and Home - easy to redo. But doesn't it also include all the camera warning distance settings I have made for my ogg files? If not, where are they stored?
Also, I have been storing the ogg files in the map folder but am probably switching to what appears to be recommended to have them in a separate 'sounds' folder. I realise I will have to set them up again but does that make any difference to where the settings for the warnings are stored?
TIA

The POI warnings and display settings are stored in the mapsettings.cfg file. Most user settings with the exception of bluetooth and few other system settings are stored in this file. _________________ Drivelux |

Thanks. So that does mean that if the mapsettings.cfg file is lost, it will be necessary to set up all the camera distance warnings again? That's the really annoying thing, especially when you cannot check what your distance settings are.
And thanks for your Operate my Go suggestion. Done my update and it worked for me. |

Why does a map download of 2GB take 4 hour(ish)?
I've reset TT and laptop, I've tried disabling anti-virus and firewall, I've checked network settings but nothing less than 4 hours.
Maybe it's my BB speed or TT servers but I tried about 4 times yesterday and had to abort the download to go out, and here I am doing it again today

Simple guidance is for 20 seconds warning, set your warning distance at 10 times speed - 20mph = 200yds, 30mph 300yds, 60mph 600yds and so on. We recommend doubling those for mobile cameras.
SpikeyMikey wrote: | Why does a map download of 2GB take 4 hour(ish)? | It'll be TT servers busy (they don't give an engaged tone and tell you to try later, they just add you to everybody else downloading the new maps at the same time).
The solution is to start a download and go to bed - if you can sleep without worrying what TT are getting up to! When new buyers start doing that download under Latest Map Guarantee in a month's time, it'll positively fly down to them because there'll be next to nobody sharing the wire. _________________ Dennis

The file is around 2.2GByte which if you had a dedicated connection to the TomTom server at 8Mbit/s would take around 45 mins.
However you may not be getting the full 8Mbit/s to your local exchange if you have ADSL due to distance related line losses.
The bandwidth between your local exchange/node and the TomTom servers node is contended as in you are sharing it with many other internet users, so unless the Internet is quiet you will not get the full bandwidth.
The TomTom servers will only be able to put out data at a certain rate and if thousands of users are trying to download at the same time, they will have to share the output of the TomTom servers and everyones downloads will slow down.
It took me under an hour yesterday around 8am to download the file. _________________ Drivelux |

Thanks to you both.
I'll just have to be patient then, I should have remembered last night but after spending 2.5 hours getting home from Fulham (45 miles or so), even with HD traffic, I had other things on my mind _________________ Mike

2.5 hours for only 45 miles? And you're complaining about 2GB in four hours - that's millions or squillions of stuff, innit? _________________ Dennis

Took about 25-30 minutes here. And that was at the peak time in the hours after the maps were announced. Plain old BT Broadband. |

Hmmmmmmmmmm!!
I'm on BT too but I'm in a rural area which means I'm not near the exchange. When installed I was told I'd get around 2meg that was a few years ago. Maybe I should have done it from the office where I'm about 500 yards from the exchange!
I'm going to have to abort the download again as I've just been called out, at least it resumes downloading the 'millions and squillions' of thingies from where it left off _________________ Mike

Same here but has anyone hadany MapShare Correction to download yet?
I'm sure after the last map my old corrections were there but then disappeared after downloading more corrections. If this happens again i might not bother with the Map Update Service anymore .... |
