|
|
Hi people
In a pickle here on what to buy, have been using a Navman F20 until I changed it for a terrible Road Angel Nav 6000 but now need to get something else. I have seen a TT Classic XL with Traffic for £122, can anyone advise are these any good? Or is there a better model for the same price or less.
Have looked over various sites and to be honest have become overwhelmed with the different conflicting information I have come across so I thought I would ask the best...you guys.
Thanks in advance |

Do you have a link to that TT Classic so we can check which one?
You will find the TomTom very much easier to use than either of your previous purchases. Do you need a widescreen or Europe coverage? The Traffic antenna isn't great but the issue is the traffic network and reception is rarely great on any device.
Let us know your budget and requirements and we can advise. _________________ Darren Griffin |

HI Darren thanks for the reply
Here is the link, after a discount code it comes down in price but I am fully open to suggestions
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/601179/TOM-TOM-XL-Classic-with-Traffic?cm_sp=FeatureEnd-_-GPS_Navigation-_-position
Ooops forgot to mention have no need for euro mapping just fancy something different as my previous purchases were slow at picking up a reception and a pian to navigate. Only chose TT as I used one many years ago and that inspired me to get my 1st sat nav the F20, my budget is well £80 to £130 ish, have seen a Navman F45 but am again confused.
Thank you

The TomTom Classic XL is usually the original One XL which was supplied in three different versions:
1/ Small amount of built in memory containing regional maps
2/ Large amount of built in memory containing European maps
3/ No internal memory with maps on an SD card.
All models had an SD card slot and Bluetooth for a data connection (no handsfree as there is no microphone built in to the hardware).
All models had the RDS-TMC receiver socket on the base, so if it comes with traffic there will be an RDS-TMC receiver in the box.
There is some discussion about "Which One/ XL" in This Thread.
And for information about the One XL, which now seems to be called the XL Classic by some retailers Here - Mike |

No that's a good unit, UK maps only but if that's all you need then it's a good 'un.
I haven't spent much time searching but Amazon have the same unit without the Traffic antenna for £109.95. As I say, personally I think the RDS Traffic service is a waste of time so if you don't want/need it, Amazon is cheaper.
If you do though, the the Comet deal is cheaper than adding it as an accessory.
And it fully supports our speed camera database ;)
Hope that helps. _________________ Darren Griffin |

The unit Comet are selling in the advert is one of the later XL devices with NO SD card slot, the stupid names/ numbers for the entire One and XL range often cause confusion - Mike |

Hi Guys
Thank you for your prompt replies, good to hear it is compatible with the PGPSW files as this is what I intend to buy too.
Do you know if the comet one will have ROI maps too? |

Yes it will as the maps are either UK&ROI or Western_Europe on these units, either way it will contain ROI coverage - Mike |

Unless the "XL" part is really important to you I spotted this gem of a deal at Halfords...
Tomtom One IQ T £129.99
It is tomtom one IQ routes, but has the traffic adapter with it. This seems a bit of a steal and I would think that the mixture of IQ routes and Traffic would be enough to keep you out of trouble the vast majority of the time.
I would prefer it over a none IQ route model but maybe that is just me? |

Right been to comet got the Classic XL with Traffic and free Leather case and home charger pack too, all for £122 plus 3% cash via Topcashback so about £118 in the end.
Time to read up on the manual before i do anything. Anything in particular I should be aware of before doing the Latest map update thing?
Guy in store mentioned I can put different celebrity voices on it that can be found for free online, is this a risk or worth doing?
Thanks again people for your help |

Back it up using Windows Explorer BEFORE doing anything at all with it.
Install TomTom Home on your PC and use that to update the application to the latest available.
Use TomTom Home LMG to update the map to the latest available (v840)
Back it up again using Windows Explorer.
Install the Speed Camera files and set them up.
Enjoy using the device.
You might find some voices for free using TomTom Home, most are charged for though.
If you are unsure about backing it up have a look at the FAQ page near the top of this forum section index as that contains plenty of handy information - Mike |
