PostPosted: Sat Nov 21, 2009 4:13 pm    Post subject: Duplicate PocketGPS Camera POI Entries Reply with quote

Hi

Just moved to TT One IQ from Co-Pilot and I have a question regarding the Pocket GPS camera categories in the POI list. I downloaded extracted and copied the consolidated OV2 and BMP files into the Western and Central Europe folder. (after backing up the whole device!) However I have two entries in the POI list for each of the 5 camera types. One set has a red square for the icon and the other has the relevant camera icon (i.e traffic lights, mobile camera etc.) Is this correct, and if so does each category need to be "enabled" for notification - or most likely - have I done something wrong? (I did copy both BMP file types over i.e _x2.bmp and just .bmp was this correct?)

Many thanks

Terry

It's certainly not right, but difficult to see exactly what you've done wrong.

The red square is just indicating that you have a POI file with a missing .bmp icon, but for the camera database you should only have one .ov2 data file and the two .bmp files for each camera type.

Rather than trying to workout where you've gone wrong, it would probably be quicker to just browse the TT using Windows Explorer and REMOVE everything with names starting with "pocketgps....", then start again with a fresh copy - For the consolidated version, all you should have are:

pocketgps_uk_gatso.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile.ov2
pocketgps_uk_pmobile.ov2
pocketgps_uk_redlight.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs.ov2

plus the two .bmps for each one (you were correct about having the normal and the '...x2' one for each category).

Once that's all working, don't forget you can also add our 'real voice' alerts to replace the bing-bong warnings.

I would suggest that if you have 2 entries for each camera type then the one with the Red Square is an older file that is named slightly differently. The Red Square is an indication that there is not a corresponding BMP file.

If you check the Folder with Windows Explorer you should see 3 files for each camera set. An OV2, a BMP and the BMP with the _x2 in the name.

You must have another 5 Files that are named differently, and these are the ones you can delete.

That's what I was going to say, but thought it would be quicker to say "delete the lot and start again".
Then I got carried away and typed the list of what should be there etc. so it probably wasn't quicker in the end! Laughing

Thanks everyone for their replies. I've tried deleting all files and starting again but with the same result and I only have one ov2 file and two .bmp files for each camera type. This is a new TomTom and this was the first download, so there are no old files.

@ Darren yes I am using a MAC and I used Unarchiver to unzip the files - is this the cause?

It's not unarchiver, its the Mac. Mac's use hidden files a lot, called DOT Underscore files, they have the same filename as the original but with a '._' before them.

This isn't an issue on a Mac but on other file systems these files are not hidden hence the red square you see.

You can prevent it by running a command after you copy but I just ignore it.

See here for a solution if it bothers you.

As I say, it doesn't cause any other issue other than what you see and only manifests itself when you copy files from a Mac to a PC or other device that doesn't run the MAC filesystem.

Darren,

Thanks very much. I'd seen these files before when copying from the MAC to Windows but ignored them and just hadn't associated them with this problem as they aren't visible in the Tom Tom folder.

I'll look at the solution now.

Could you have a trial subscription of TomTom's own database running at the same time?

Robin, we've identified the cause as DOT_Underscore files created by Mac. Only visible on non-Mac OS's.

Ah! I was called away and my laptop sat unattended on my desk for a couple of hours before I pushed the Submit button, and I hadn't seen the two posts immediately before mine

@ Darren

Just thinking further this might be a problem in that there could be potentially loads of ._ files created if you had to restore from an entire TT device backup from a MAC (i.e one that wasn't done using TT Home but by just block copying all the TT folders and files.)

It's not an issue in my experience as TomTom just ignores the ._ files. They only ever appear in the POI and Custom Cursor screens but otherwise cause no issues.

There is a utility that will clean these files and remove them in any copy operation to a non-apple disk called Blue Harvest. I'm running it as a trial now (30 day trial) and it looks quite useful.

Once installed it will automatically remove the ._ files but for any existing disks you can connect them (such as your TomTom) then right click and have Blue Harvest purge all the ._ files from that disk.

$13.95 for a full licence.
