I bought a 12v marine socket,wired it up straight from the battery.The marine socket is waterproof and has a rubberised cap which fits into the socket hole when not in use,cost me around £6
I use this every day and perfect. |

That looks like the orignial plug/socket for the loudspeaker.
I'm more confused by the configuration of the terminals of the 2.5mm socket on that same drawing. I'm assuming it is wired using the switch contacts so the loudspeaker still works when the headphones are not plugged in, but it isn't very clear. It's also rather odd that the socket is shown, but the two headphone drivers are ALSO shown on the diagram when they would really be "off-picture" on the other side of the socket - so it loks like there are two different drawings combined together!
Any chance of more info, 'IPBR21054'? Or another drawing showing that socket diagrammatically? |

I'm fitting an earphone socket to my One XL so I can have sound when used on my bike so appreciate this post which inspired me to do it.
However, I'm also confused by the diagram and as Andy says, the earphones will be on the jack-plug side of the socket so it looks to me that the only place for the resistor is in the lead from the jack-plug to the earphones outside the Device.
I can wire mine so the speaker works until you fit the earphione jack-plug which then breaks the circuit to the speaker.
If IPBR21054 or anyone else can post to clarify where the resistor goes it would be appreciated - I'm just soldering it together now. |

The resistor goes in line (sieries) with the phones. It can be fitted either inside or outside the TT, but the bottom left of the last photo in the OP shows it soldered to the back of the new plug, a tidy and logical solution. |

Thanks but I can't see how to do that with the terminals on my socket and will post a diagram later showing how I've wired it.
Anyway, I've connected the wires without the resistor and it works - the speaker is correctly interrupted when the jack-plug ie inserted.
I normally have volume set at 90% when in car but found I need to reduce that to 50% when using the earphone so is that what the resistor is doing without altering volume %? If that is so then does the value of the resistor depend on the impedance of the earephone?
I've got a mono earphone and impedance measures 7.2 ohms on my cheapo meter but the speaker measures 4.2 ohms.
I admit that my knowledge of electonics is pretty low but shouldn't that be the other way round - the higher impedance would need a higher volume setting for the same sound or is it because the earphone is directly in my ear so needs less volume? |

Good idea if you hapen to have one of a suitable value. Otherwise the age old trial and error method works OK, but supposes that you have a bunch of resistors handy. The higher the value, the quieter the sound.

I cant remember 100% now about the picture as it was some time ago and not touched it since..
I added the resistor to overcome problems with sound from the tom tom should headphones be connected or not,ie to loud to low etc.By fitting the resistor the problem was gone and works 100% fine as if the sound is the same either way.
I have been using this tom tom now with this set up for ages every day and never a problem with it.
I have now added a extension cable to the bike so i do not have the headphone cable all acros the tank etc.
I have a nice audio socket just down by the fuel tap so the cable comes out my jacket and plugs straight into it.At the other end by the head stock i followed the existing cable loom on the bike and as not to just leave the end of the extension lead sat hanging around i put a socket onto the frame of the bike and now plug the end of the lead into it when not used,looks nice and neat when not used and also keeps it dry also.
Saved me ££££££££££ doing this mod and cost less than £10

Good idea - I shall do the same. Also easy to make an extension cable with either 2.5 or 3.5 socket if you change earphone. I've got a 2.5 earphone but I think most at my local Maplins are 3.5.
.....and thanks for answering my questions M8TJT - I think I understand a bit more now. |

This is how I wired the chassis socket and still can't see how the resistor can be fitted inside the unit - only in series in the lead to the earphone.
(this was drawn in Word 2007 - a big improvement over Word 2000)

Just completed the wiring,bit fiddly and had a scare when I inserted the earphones to try them,the unit went off when i did a speech volume test and I thought i had fried it but it powered back up ok and I found that the headphone jack wasn't fully inserted,with this corrected the phones worked ok.
So it's a big THANK YOU to all for your help.
Just got to sort out a mounting arrangement now! |

I used this person,

He uses the ram mount system.Phone him and tell him what bike etc you have and he will do the rest for you.
I bought the following.
Ball head which fits inside the head stock and expands a rubber ballon if you like just leaving a nylon ball showing.
I also bought from him a strong sturdy cage that fits around the tomtom.
There is a small bracket with a ball mount that fits to the back of the cage.
Then to join the two he sold me a clamp set up which locks on both ball joints.
This i think cost a total of £60.00
All this can be seen in the photo of the tomtom on the bike in the photo. |
