i have a 6v, 4.2Ah/20hrs rechargeable battery for one of Mini-MaFt's ride-on toys. However, the battery is no longer charging (won't get more than 5v from it) yet the charger is firing out 7v so no issue with that.

My question is, is the 6v the important part? or does the Ah rating also effect the power? my understanding is that the Ah rating is more to do with how long the battery will last as opposed to how much power is given out. ie if I got a 6v 12Ah/20hrs battery to replace it, will it blow the toy or is the 6v what's important?

cheers in advance!

MaFt,

Your understanding is correct. To use as an analogy for a battery a tank of water with water flowing out of a tap at the bottom of the tank: output voltage is equivalent to the pressure of the water coming out of the tap and is decided by the height of the water remaining in the tank, and Amp Hours is equivalent to the volume of water the tank holds. So your replacement battery should not harm the toy, but should run it for a much longer period between recharges.

To add to the last posting you toy will run longer but it will also take longer to charge, bear in mind that the replacement will be be larger i presume that you have checked that it will fit in the space ok.

Have a look on the Maplin web site HERE (opens in a new window).

Near the bottom of the page are the Technical Specifications - sizes etc.

it's a thomas train and the current battery fits neatly into a little slot under the coal-tender bit. however, you can also lift up the seat and there's space for a larger battery.

might nip down to maplin later

cheers guys
