Hello,

I've just received my first SatNav (new TomTom XL). It seemed to work fine straight from the box. I then downloaded the Mac version of TomTom home onto my iMac with no problems. I connected the XL via the UBS cable & went through the process of updaiting files etc. Again, no problem. However, I then came to a page telling me to disconnect & then reconnect the device to my computer as a new app has been installed & I need to restart the device. Now I've tried just pulling the UBS out & putting it back in & turning it off before removing & replacing the UBS but I just end up with a big X flashing on the XL's screen & I can't get into the main menu etc.

Please help, I have no idea what to try next!

I've tried following the online help but with no luck. I think I disconnected the UBS lead without ejecting the devise.

All help/advise is greatly appreciated!

First, don't do that again! Smile

Second , follow these instructions

1. Make a full backup with Finder (instructions in your other topic).

2. With Finder, DELETE all the LOOSE files on on the TT (i.e the ones that are NOT in any folders). DO NOT delete any folders!

3. Again with Finder, DELETE the contents of the "program" folder in Home's download cache. Normally on a Windows PC it is in "My documents/TomTom/Home/ Downloads/ Program", but the path will be different on your machine. You can check the location by looking in Home itself on the Tools menu/ Home Preferences/Folder locations)

4. Connect TT to computer and run Home.

5. Home should automatically check for updates and prompt you to install them, if not:-

6. Click "Update my TomTom - wait to see what it offers you.

7. Select the Application update and wait for it to install.

8. Click on 'Device - Disconnect Device' in Home's menu, WAIT for it to re-boot and ask if you want to connect to the computer, select "No" and when you see the normal navigation screen, turn off and disconnect.

Thank you, thank you, Thank you!

That worked perfectly! It took me until 1.30am to get it to work but it seems fine now. Thanks again Andy.

One last question - Should I back up again now it's working?

Always do a Backup, when you have made changes, and it works OK.

And now moved to the correct Forum.

And in future, you must 'eject' the TomTom which will appear as a mounted drive on your desktop rather than simply unplugging the USB cable.

i agree with everything said. the first thing anyone should do with a new unit is make a full copy of everything on the device before they do a single thing. before they add their address (ok maybe not that soon!) add a POI or favourite or plan a route. That way you have a known good system to fall back on. when you make changes you should do the same and try to keep the last 2 full backups on your computer

Now, the same thing happened to me earlier this week. I checked for updates with one of my maps. all ok. went to bed. next day, did the same with my other map. Seemed ok..................... but wouldn't reboot, kept hanging on the splash screen. multiple reboots didnt do anything. examination showed one file of zero bytes against a backup size of (i cant remember). copying the file from backup didnt work, so I ended up moving the maps off the device deleting the system files off TT and copying the system files from my back up. That restored the unit to a functioning situation, and moving the newly updated maps back completed the job.

At one point after moving the maps off, I got a big red cross suggesting that the memory was defective (scary), and there was one file that wouldnt delete. i ended up running scandisk on the device after i'd deleted everything, and then restoring navcore.

i wondered how it happened, and the conclusion is that although I DID disconnect/ejected the device from the USB port, for some reason there was a slight delay and i actually pulled the plug before ejection was complete. either that or the relevant file(s) were corrupted somehow during the update......

I dont know which but it is VERY important to eject any USB device properly, and even more important to have at least one verified working backup.

I noticed that my incident corresponds approximately with a thread by Andy-P asking if mapshare was down (about Tuesday I think). maybe my problem was caused by an error on TT server? Regardless of teh cause, because I had a backup system, I lost only a couple of hours of time and effort (trying to fix it without restoring, then the actual copying time etc) nevertheless, its a kind of entertainment i can do without.
