Quote:
In the most recent version of the iPhone SDK, Section 3.3.7 of the license agreement tells users that "applications may not be designed or marketed for real time route guidance; automatic or autonomous control of vehicles, aircraft, or other mechanical devices; dispatch or fleet management; or emergency or life-saving purposes."

discuss... Confused

3.3.8 Applications that offer location-based services or functionality must notify and obtain consent from an individual when his or her location data is being collected, transmitted or otherwise used by the Application.

Quote:
3.3.9 Applications must not disable, override or otherwise interfere with any Apple implemented system alerts, warnings, display panels, consent panels and the like intended to notify the user that the user's location data is being collected, transmitted, maintained, processed or used, or intended to obtain consent for such use. If consent is withheld, Applications may not collect, transmit, maintain, process or utilize the user's location data.

just imagine, every time the screen refreshes you get a confirmation screen that you are willing to allow the application knowledge of your location... and if you don't consent then the app can't use your location data!!!

With restrictions like these in place I wonder why they bothered to fit the GPS hardware in the first place, with Apples history of license Policing and heavy use of the law system to prosecute those who fall foul of any T's & C's. I cannot find a valid reason to obtain one of these units, too restrictive IMHO.
Nice looking and quite innovative compared to the standard PPC devices, but with very little (if any) software for anything let alone GPS based applications, I will be sticking with the PPC for quite some time due to the flexibility it offers and diverse range of applications, the only question is which one to get next - I only know which one it won't be - Mike

As far as I can see you only get asked once for permission to use location info per application. There is an option on the settings->reset screen to reset location warnings, so I assume that that would wipe them out and start afresh.

I'm hoping we get some sort of car navigation app. I previously had a O2 Orbit and the tomtom software on there worked fine. Playing around with the Google maps app it seems to track my position perfectly fine when driving around.

I wish Apple would clarify the restrictions mentioned in the SDK.

Forbes carries a round-up of Sat-Nav developments on various platforms, including forthcoming TeleNav for iPhone 3G 'in the next few months'. Full story here.

It's getting a bit tiring waiting for something concrete. So far, we've just got manufacturers issuing 'spoiling' statements that they have something 'coming' - we're now only 8-9 months from a new iPhone version if Apple follows it's annual technology refresh strategy (as with the iPod Nano).

Perhaps it is nearer than you think, the new updated unit looks quite a bit different though:

You will have to scroll a bit further:

have some patience
