I have just bought a Garmin 60CSx with GB TOPO V2 and am having fun with my first ever GPS.

However, could someone answer a question that is starting to niggle away in the back of my head.............

Is there a screensaver/lock on the 60CSx?

Many thanks.

Why would you need a screensaver? The display is not going to 'burn in' like old CRTs used to. I always smile inwardly when I see computer LCD screens with screen savers. In fact the best way to save anything with these is to turn them off (or at least standby mode so the backlight is off.) This saves power and extends the life of the backlight (as long as you aren't switching it off and on every few minutes.)

Rest assured - you aren't damaging anything on your GPS - except possibly battery life on your unit - with the screen displaying the same thing all the time.

In fact the best way to extend the operating life of the batteries in your GPS is to turn off the backlight for daytime use and NOT display the map all the time and to use one of the static displays (like the odometer). If you must have the map on - then make sure it's North UP - Track Up will eat battery life with the CPU recalculating and redrawing the screen each position change (which is very likely every second). Doing this on my Colorado 300 increased the battery life from 8 hours to 11+ hours continual use - makes a significant difference in the field. The initial 8 hours was measured with the backlight off all the time in any case - so the additional battery life was down to CPU / Screen drawing saving.

Thanks for the reply.

The question was raised not because of damage to the screen but accidental activation of buttons. I prefer to use maps when navigating as the ones that Garmin produce via MapSource are complete rubbish. That said, when I do navigate I like to have my GPS switched on in my pocket to ensure that it is available for quick reference and that the trip odometer is operating.

This raises the requirement for a screen lock.
