Why, you want to use it in landscape mode?

HP historically haven't committed to the release of OS upgrades for existing machines until Microsoft make the formal launch announcements of the new OS.

Further, the first announcements from HP following a new Pocket PC OS are usually of new machines with the new OS - and they're often available some time before upgrades for existing machines.

Of course, what happens depends on a large extent as to whether Microsoft treat 2003 Second Edition as a big service pack for Pocket PC 2003, or whether they treat it as a new OS. If it's the former, then I'd expect most if not all current iPAQs to have a 2003SE ROM released free of charge - though there are rumours that even current 19xx models are not going to get 2003SE at all, and it's probably unlikely that any of the 3800, 3900 and 5450 series will get an upgrade if it's going to take much work to produce one, especially if take-up of the Pocket PC 2003 upgrades for those models was poor.

If it's treated as a new OS, then the chances are that Microsoft will make it a chargeable upgrade - at which point you're likely looking at chargeable upgrades for popular current machines only, together with possibly a 'technology guarantee' period, where recent purchasers get an upgrade for handling costs only.

There's never been a Second Edition for a Pocket PC OS before. Most of Windows 98 Second Edition was made available as a service pack for the original Windows 98 (though the new Internet Connection Sharing stuff was omitted). However, that's a good few years ago in a totally different product line, so doesn't give much clue as to what Microsoft may do.

I don't expect 2003SE to change that much - what I've seen so far indicates that the main reason is to provide native OS support for landscape and larger screens than the previously ubiquitous 200 by 320 QVGA. This was in some early rumours for Pocket PC 2003, but appears to have been dropped at the last minute. As such, its main importance of 2003SE is for VGA Pocket PCs.

The one thing definitely not to hold your breath for is major upgrades to the built in applications. With the exception of a radically improved Internet Explorer (which I believe is actually part of the core Windows CE Operating System), some minor enhancements to Inbox and a tiny bit of tidying up, the applications in Pocket PC 2003 are just the same as those in 2002. I don't think 2003SE will change things much in this department either.
