|
|
As Sony UK seem unable/unwilling to discuss their Satnav package GO!Explore for the PSP we've taken the rare step of actually buying one for review. Normally if a companies PR team can't be bothered then we would adopt the same attitude but this is a novel solution that may actually do quite well assuming Sony don't abandon it as they have their PND products!
Available from Argos and Amazon at £99.99 the package contains the GPS receiver, a 12v power adapter, Arkon car mount and a UMD disc containing maps of UK & Ireland. The software itself is iGO with their latest mapping that has 3d topography and some 3d buildings.
I'll be reviewing this in detail in a few weeks but for in the meantime I'll add some pictures to whet your appetite and answer any questions you may have in this thread.

Just checked out the video. Seems a fairly good little application.
However I did notice, it displays distance in Yards, but the spoken commands are in metres! |

I have vowed never to buy a Sony anything ever again!
I had a Sony Clie Palm PDA until they decided to withdraw support from UK. The same will probably happen with this, sell a couple of hundred thousand, make a quick killing then dump the dupes that gave them the money _________________ TT Go 720 (T)

yes, nav n go were approached by sony to make a specific version for the psp. it's rather special as the screen is not touch screen so they had to totally rework the input method!

The only thing i just noticed while looking at it for a price is it comes on the umd disc maps and everything pre loaded, how would you go for updates and what happens when new maps come out?
Would you have to buy a new disc? Maybe it loads new maps to a memory card? |

I've seen the maps for sale in the Playstation store on my PS3 so guess that you can add them to card somehow, or thinkg about it, maybe they give you an activation code for maps that are already on the UMD. |

Yup, new maps and updates can be downloaded to a memstick. During install it recommends you copy maps and system files to memstick if available to improve performance anyway. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I've had the Go!Explore for a couple of days now and i'm impressed with the speed of the thing, the console is ideally suited to this kind of application.
One problem though and big one.....I can't find any overlay for speed cameras!!! Does anyone have an idea on how I can get the speed database/overlay on to the application? |

Not sure it's possible, there are no options for it that I can see? _________________ Darren Griffin |

what is the folder structure on the memory stick?
is there anything mentioning 'alerts' in the settings?

Nothing obvious, on the memstick is this folder for the map data (the GO!Explore folders are highlighted):
In settings there is a 'WARNINGS' menu but this allows control of safety mode and speed limit alerts only.

bummer - presume there is no support then as there is normally an extra option for speed camera alerts... |
