I have Western Europe map version v660.1219 operating quite well on my Tom-Tom classic..
Just looked at available downloads, using TomTom Home and the latest WE map is v.861.5
1. Are there any significant changes to the map.
(we visit France quite a lot)
2. Will the newer map work on my classic.
3. can I activate all my Poi's on the new map if I down load it..
and lastly -- for this OAP -- is it easy to do -- I am using Tom Tom Home - will that do it for me...
Thanks

Are you sure you aren't looking at the map size? There are newer maps, but I'd expect you to be offered 720.xxxx or 805.xxxx.
I can't answer 1, but 2 and 3 are definitely "Yes", as is your question about HOME. You will need to delete the old map first, though (after copying it in its entirety to your PC first). _________________ Tim |

The v660 was the last map release TomTom made available prior to them removing small details from the map, these little changes are difficult to spot though and by now the v660 map is quite out of date.
The bits they have removed are points on the road while cornering, so instead of a nice progressive sweeping curve on the map you see a slightly more jagged appearance. This reduces the overall file size of the map, the spare space is then used for new roads etc. They have to keep the overall map size below a certain figure to make sure it will fit on all devices it is intended for.
The new v720 map is as up to date as you can get, and at the reduced sale price it is a good time to buy.
Some forum members have reported this map is more up to date than the actual road! - in this case the A1M where they are altering the layout of a number of junctions, the v720 show what the road will be like when its finished. Grab yourself a bargain while the sale is still present - Mike |

my son is down loading it on this computer as I type for his tom-tom 520...
It is taking simply ages to do -- over an hour so far but seems to be a massive file.. and he just got a new 2 GB SR card to do it to..
will see what happens in an hour or so..
It says at the moment 24 .mins -- but it is going up and down like a fiddlers elbow.

Go and make another cup of tea, map downloads are known to take quite some time depending upon the demand from the server, with the current discounted offer it might take a little longer than normal - Mike |

No you're not. You're on a learning curve, just like most people on here are or havebeen at some time. Stick around and within a month you'll be helping others out. _________________ Tim |

It took nearly 2 hours 15 Min's to down load --- file size 1604.1 MB
Sorted on his 520 and moved some of his Poi's --
the map still hasn't got the industrial estate down the road and the new Morison's depot..
So I don't know if I will do it for my Classic just yet... it will do me for my holidays this year I think..
So all in all you have to allow a good 4 hours to play around downloading and setting up..

If you're lucky... I've known West and Central Europe maps to take over 5 hours just to download! |

Where would we be without broadband?
I recently sent an e-mail with a 2MB attachment and I got such a roasting because the recipient was still on dial-up and I hadn't given it a second thought, so 1.6GB would take an incalculable length of time _________________ Andy

My 5-hour experience was on some super-fast link we have at work, so it wasn't our connection. As you know the TT servers are notoriously slow. |

Yes, but my comment was aimed at the growing reliance on downloading.
I'm constantly competing with an X-Box on my own broadband connection and it always seems to get the lion's share of the bandwidth.
There is probably still a trick to guessing the 'quiet' times for downloading large files though _________________ Andy

Often the only way I know my son is home is that I can see the activity lights whirring away on my wireless router! |

My son has got to work today - with his new maps installed --- no thanks to TOM -- his road has disappeared of the map...
He has sent it in as a Map -up-date ? but don't know if it will happen..
Also the industrial estate that is just down the road from here - been here at least 7 years -- no sign of the roads -- only stub roads going no where..
Hmmmmmm...
Is it worth paying for a NEW map up date -- when things have been taken of -- and others not yet been put on???
seems a bit of a con to me.. even though the price has been reduced...
or is the reduction to get rid of stock -- before the next REAL up date.. or is that cynical?? _________________ Happy to meet -- Sorry to part -- Happy to meet again |
