Apparently Microsoft has sponsored someone to trek across the USA (really lucky individual) with a view to establishing real time issues associated with GPS and digital imagery

I'm pretty sure that the true drive for GPS in mobile phones is in the US, where it is likely that phones making a 911 call will have to give their location. Google for Enhanced 911.

Maybe Lutz can enlighten us further.
