And neither do we, all the problems users reported with units dying, charge issues etc all ocurred when using the cigarette lighter lead, hard wired cradle installs seemed to be unaffected and the cradle did help TomToms BT solution stand out from the crowd. _________________ Darren Griffin |

The cradle connected at 12V is very unlikely to cause any problems as it has a good standard regulator built into it. The regulator is a LM2575T-5 which supplies 5V at 1amp and the guaranteed tolerance is +-0.2V over an input range of 7V-40V. At 12V the tolerance is +-0.1V.
At 5V input the cradle is only a connector with no regulation.
The dual cigar lighter lead that TomTom used to supply also uses the same regulator and has a slightly larger inductor to reduce surges.
It is far more likely that the mains adaptor transformer has poorer regulation. It is sealed and I am not going to break it to find out how it works. |
