pocketgpsworld.comApple have just released the second beta of their SDk for version 2.0 of the iPhone firmware. As soon as it had been released eager developers were busy scouring every line of code for hints as to what new features may or may not be coming to the platform when v2.0 is released in June.

According to one iPhone unlocking site, www.iphonehellas.gr, text strings in the beta 2.0 firmware make references to RoleGps which suggest some form of GPS support may be forthcoming. Whether this means just basic support for external GPS receivers or the much desired internal GPS in the new 3G iPhone rumoured to be announced soon is not yet known.

Earlier firmware made mention of Nike which suggested that their sports pedometer devices may be supported but this has been dropped in the latest version. Lets hope that GPS is here to stay!

I would be very suprised if they (Apple) are NOT considering GPS on their 'phone. To get to an industry leading position they would need to compete with Nokia in this marketplace. The network providers will be wanting to sell devices that can support money-spinning LBS solutions so there will be some pressure on them to comply.

However that is not to say that it will make it into production soon. All that you can say about these 'leaks' is that the s/w developers may have put something in to make life easier when they decide to go ahead. I don't use Macs but from reading the odd comments here and there it would appear that they don't have a great track record in supporting GPS applications todate. But Apple do have a really good marketing department (as well as product designers/developers) - so this could be the start of a stealth marketing campaign and the GPS iPhone may well arrive next month Laughing They could call it iPhound (now you know why I don't work in marketing)!

Don't remember where I read it but there are rumours that Apple are actively trying to prevent programs from running in the background. Like in the bad old Palm days. This doesn't bode too well for a location tracking program...

Yeah, I read that too... Apparently there's no specific reason why it shouldn't be done, but it does tend to complicate matters and so Apple don't wish to allow it... still, the Palm OS isn't multitasking and TT still runs on it (rather well, tell the truth... grumble)

It rang a bell with me as well, is this possibly the article that we are all thinking about?
