"This maybe a stupid question, and i have tried search, but results proved inconclusive. I have a One XL and i was wondering is it possible to navigate without the voices, but still having audible camera and speed warnings..."
Your obvious suggestion will not allow for still having audible camera and speed warnings.
For this, he needs to follow the advice in the previous posts before yours, unfortunately.
The above message was posted in case you were unsure yourself too mate, not too put you in your place etc, before any suggest that.
On the contrary, offers of help are welcomed round here, so please do keep your posts coming, if you think you have an answer for any questions you see on here too mate, rest assured.
When you go to change the voice does the device ask you to only make available voices from the same country? - The x20 units certainly do this but my one XL refuses to ask the question, although this could be due to me disabling the question, if it ever did this in the first place? - Mike
Yes it does, to find the silent voice i have to search voices that arent in the country (english). Not a life and death thing obvioussly, just frustrating. Cant understand why the above suggestion didnt help either.

I never knew about changing the .vif file details.
So I overcame the time-consuming business by deleting all the voices I didn't want, just kept two - the nice lady and the Silent one BUT I did backup copies of just the voices before I deleted anything. I STILL had to select non English, but there weren't any to search through. I found that when I went for it, it still showed the English voices which I had deleted though and to get out of searching through them, I searched left, instead of right (or vice versa, can't remember now).
Bit sledgehammer-ish, but it worked! _________________ Dennis

With thanks to "Jolly Roger" on another forum who spotted this...
To determine which language the silent voice isn't speaking there are some instructions for creating/editing the .vif file on the new TomTom "create your own content" guides.
Look HERE and select "create voices" followed by "create index file".
The format of the .vif file is now expanded to seven lines of info:
Line 1 – Name (old style, may be left empty for newest software)
Line 2 – Filename of the corresponding .chk file
Line 3 – Name
Line 4 – Number representing gender
Line 5 – Number representing language
Line 6 – Number representing flag
Line 7 – Version number
