Hi Ash and others,
your voice utility works like a charm!
I changed a few instructions, joined them using a new filename and pushed it back to the Garmin. There it appears as a new voice which I can select - so I didn't have to replace an existing voice.
A couple of questions still remain:
- the new voice has the same name as the one I started with ("Nederlands"). Any idea where this name is coded and how to change it?
(I looked at the .sum and .vpm files with a text editor but didn't find it)
- any idea how to take Tomtom voice files (.chk/.vif) and dissect them into .wav files so I can add them to Garmin?
Best regards, Gijs. |

I see it too. But Voice Utility says: "This beta version has expiried - please download the latest release" and do not work now!
How to make it possible to make it work? |

Well you'd need to download the latest version but it appears Ash10 has taken it offline for now.
Ash10 has stated that support for the product has ceased for now. You'll have to wait for Ash10 to comment or for a new release. |

|
|
I downloaded this product last month, did a quick test on one of the WAV files, and joined it together. The good news was IT WORKED !!!
The BAD news is I spent 2 hours putting a new voice for all 100 plus voices and when I went to join, the Voice Utility came back and said "This beta version has expired - please download the latest release"
I do not mind having no support, however, I would expect the product, BETA or not, to continue to work without an expiration.
Does anyone know how this is capturing an expiration tag? Is it after number of uses, or is it date driven? I'm sure ASH could tell us a work around since we can not get a newer version. Or I guess I could start writing one myself, although I would need to learn if it's as simple as combining the WAV files, or ???
Thanks,
T |

Ash10 decides how the software works, is distributed and under what conditions you can use it.
If Ash10 decides to tell you how to get round the expiration then that is up to Ash10.
Ash10 has already pointed out that all support has been withdrawn and this may include the downloads too.
For now i would realise this was a very good piece of software written by someone who gave it away. If Ash10 decides to pull support and download of the program then that is Ash10's perogative. |

as a temporary measure ash10 has withdrawn the functionality of HIS voice editor software.
the hows and whys are not relevant - it's his software that he offered to others for free. yes it's a shame he's pulled it (temporarily according to his previous post) but is it really that important to have a different voice file?!

Despite having released Voice Utility as free-to-use for personal use, it has come to my attention that a UK-based company has been exploiting it for their own commercial gain.
Unfortunately this has forced me to temporarily revoke usage of Voice Utility, while I persue said company through legal channels. It would be unprofessional of me to name the company involved at this time.
Hopefully things will be back to normal in a few weeks time - your patience is appreciated! |

i'm presuming that if it ever had to go to court then ash10 would prefer to ensure there are no risks of libel?
there's always someone waiting to freeload...

It's an interesting one this as I have used Ash's software myself but just want to ask the definition of commertial use for the product because this would need to be very clear for any legal process.

commercial use = using the software to create files that are then sold for profit. i.e. using the software as an integral part of your business model without the correct licensing.
