|
|
Does anyone out there use the "Total Ascent" and "Total Descent" data which is available on the Profile page of the eTrex Vista HCx?
I found that mine was giving readings which are only about half the true values. For instance, having driven an undulating five miles from a point about 500 feet AMSL followed by an ascent to about 1650 feet AMSL, the Total Ascent was showing around 800 feet. Obviously the minimum amount it could possibly be is 1150 feet, and the true figure is probably about 1500. The Vertical Speed reported also seems to be under-reported by about the same amount (around 50%), although the Elevation figures shown are reasonably accurate.
I reported this to Garmin UK, who were surprised but receptive. I was fairly certain that it must be a software bug (I'm currently using version 2.50), but they have now told me that I must have a faulty unit. I'm not convinced, although I have sent it off to them today for repair or replacement. Either way it's a bummer - this is already a replacement unit, because the one I originally bought had a fault as well.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has used this feature, and whether they have (a) had similar problems to mine or (b) found that it works correctly.

Humph. I sent my Vista HCx back to Garmin Europe, and a replacement one arrived today. I have just repeated the journey I described in my original message, and the problem is still there.
So, presumably, it IS a bug in the software, which is what I thought in the first place. I have spoken to Garmin Europe about it, and they say that they will now report it as a bug to the software developers.
Meanwhile, having got yet another unlock code, I have to reload all the MapSource Topo GB maps which takes a good 6 hours.
I'm less than happy. |

I'm sure you will have checked this but you are set to feet and not metres aren't you _________________ Phil |

Oh yes! And, as I reported, the elevation values are fine. It is just the Total Ascent, Total Descent and Vertical Speed figures that are affected by the bug, so far as I can tell. |

Might the bug be causing the GPS to compute the values in metres despite you have set feet. |

I don't think so. The figures I am getting are roughly half what they should be: metres instead of feet wouldn't account for that. |
