Hi
Well update from Tom Tom
They say that
1) YOu can not run the 720 North American maps on the 520 as it has to run them in the internal memory and the NA maprs are too large
2) they confirmed (and changed their minds) that the maps for the 720 DO HAVE more detail in landscaping and POIs
3) they said my questions were "ridiculous" which was nice
So, if anyone does mange to run the North American 720 maps on a 520 please tell me also.
I also found out that new maps are due out on the 20 Jan and that the North American maps are newer maps that the US and Canada on the 520
I look forward to hearing from you all |

I SO MUCH hope someone can confirm this exact situation, just to prove TT wrong.
If a 1785 MB Western Europe map will work fine on a Go 300, then surely a 1765 MB North America map will work on a Go520! |

I have a go520(1gb internal)
On the internal memory i have the Iberia map and everything else(OS,loquendo, zip, raster, sounds, voices etc..).
On the memory card(2gb)i have the Western Europe(1785mb).
No problems at all.
On the "manage maps"i can switch to the WE.
So,just add a 2gb sd card and install the North America map in there. |

well I am tempted to say f-it and try.
This is the last response from Tom Tom
"The essential map data for both maps are the same. It is only that the larger map version will only run on an internal memory. The internal memory on a Go 720 is not 512 MB but 2GB! Only data (if running the Western Europe map) like landscape in Scandinavia (if you are a UK customer) will not be included to limit the size of the map. However the navigation experience and all the roads will be exactly the same. This applies to the US maps as well. The fact that they are named differently is immaterial. It is the first 3 digits of the version of the map which is relevant."
Now I know that they are different. The North American is different. With some companies the customer support is ace and people know what they are doing, I feel that the Tom Tom people are just script readers with no knowledge.
If I were them I would have got my research 520 and tried the maps to see if it worked and then replied, but that would be the normal answer. |

Well..he is wrong
From my experience with tomtom support,i can honestly say that you need luck in getting a guy or a gal that really has real and acurate info.
Regarding the diferences in map size(one with +900mb,the other with +1600mb).I have no doubt in my mind that some data is thrown away. Not only the cspeech files, poiīs,but actual roads.
On the "small" WE map, they did cut small villages!!
I did and will always chosse the 920 has my model when buying new maps.
Go for it. |

See this example:
When i bought the WE map,a guy from tomtom told me that the big one would not work on my late One.
I went ahead and got the big one.Result:no problems!!
I then called them to ask about the Canary Islands map(the website states it comes in a separate map).
The same guy sent me a link to download it.It was an older version!!
I called again, and got a girl. She informs me that the Canary Islands are now part of the WE map.Guess what..she was right!
My one broke a few weeks later,i decided to get the 520.
I called tomtom(got the same guy )to ask to replace my old device id to the id of the 520,so that i could use the map on the 520.He tells me that itīs not possible.
I called again(few minuts apart)to see if i could talk to a diferent guy.
Result:i got that helpfull girl. She tols me that because i didnīt imput the device code(tomtom support did that in a previous call)i could just make the change under "my tomtom" on the website.Again she was dead on |

So with the one/xl do you have to choose which memory to use when you want to swap map, be useful to know for friends gps, thanks. _________________ Samsung Mega

On the One/XL with internal and sd card slot, the boot procedure is automatic.
If it detects that there is a sd with the OS it boots from there. The maps must be in the sd card to be used.
If there is no sd card, then it will boot from the internal memory. |

Thats good to know, i have been having exactly the same thoughts about this the last couple of weeks and didn't want to waste Ģ35 on a map that didn't work?
Did you buy the 720 map version, i was debating the 920 map version (it is another 200MB bigger, which i think is a difference in the POI.dat file) but not sure if that will work on my 520. Think i will give it a go over the weekend, when i get my 4GB SD card. |

I thought about the 920s maps too but i only had an extreme II 2gb card. You will need a fast 10x SD card mind and it all looks good.
I cant do a route as it says I am not in the US.
The 920 hs a 200mb bigger POI that I would love wink wink.
Good luck mate. TT are terwats for sure

You can plan a route using the USA map if you try the following:
Use the advanced planning (or more recently named Prepare Route) AtoB is the icon irrespective of what they have called it, this will allow you to set a start point and destination once the route has planned on the device press the "Details" button and then use "Show Route Demo" to play the route in the USA - you must select the USA map in change preferences/ Manage Maps/ Switch maps before trying the above though, and remember to switch it back to the Europe map once you have finished playing - Mike |

Would that also be possible if you do it through home and operate my go as it asks you to set your home location and you can make it antwhere you want in the US. _________________ NEW Tomtom GO 500 (hope it is good)
