Sony Announce GPS Navigation Solution for PSP - GO!Explore

Whilst TomTom may take exception to the GO!Explore branding, it's good to see the PSP GPS solution finally being nearing release.

Sony chose the CES Show in Las Vegas to officially announce their PSP navigation solution, GO!Explore. Although the actual release date is yet to be confirmed, Sony are saying 'Early Spring 2008'. GO!Explore utilises an external plug-in SiRFIII GPS receiver and iGO navigation software supplied by NavNGo who you may recall caused a stir at CeBIT last year with their 3D mapping. The map data will be supplied by TeleAtlas and the application and maps will come on a UMD.

It's an interesting solution and very reasonable priced, particularly if you already own a PSP. The only limiting factor that I can see is that the PSP lacks a touch screen which will mean lengthy and frustrating address input via the joystick and an on screen keyboard. Although the GPS is plug-in, it is physically attached to the PSP, perhaps a future update will have a PSP with internal GPS. The now defunct Gizmondo gaming device had GPS which was utilised in some games in a novel way.

Go!Explore will be available in three bundles:

GPS receiver and UMD (including maps of the relevant country): RRP €119
GPS receiver, UMD (including maps), Car Adaptor and Car Mount: RRP €149
PSP, GPS receiver, UMD (including maps), Car Adaptor and Car Mount: RRP €299

Nice pictures. The PSP has a beautiful screen but is useless in daylight.
Will look forward to a review on the mapping and the sensitivity of the receiver

mike, did they have the actual software on show? at IFA they just had a demo video running rather than the real thing (sony were being very cautious about handing out the discs!!)

i couldn't get the video to show hence asking Wink

Ive had mine for a while now and as it appears to be offically released now are there any thoughts on getting the Camera Database into Go Explore?
The mapping is equal to TT and the sensitivity is great.
There are some bugs with the voices giving you KM when you set Miles etc etc but over all if you already have a PSP then its a great addition.
The lack of touch screen is not an issue as you have enough hard buttons. The text entry is pretty clever. Over all 7/10.

If anyone manages to port the cameras i would be very interested.

Isn't it running a version of iGO? That normally supports custom POIs?
