Arrival (ETA) using GPS data.

I know that one can incorporate signal processing on GPS positional data to compute velocity, hence ETA. However, I do not want to re-invent the wheel and would prefer to use an existing low cost solution to complete this project.

Any recommendations on relatively low cost solution solution or sources of how one can use GPS to accurately estimate ETA?

TIA.

Klaus

Welcome to the forum, is your application intended for vehicle, aviation, walking, sailing or something else as you would need additional information for calculating an ETA depending upon the intended usage - Mike

Then you will need to know the roads that the device is going to be using and each road should be assigned a speed value, if you know the distance of each road type and its associated speed you can work out the duration to derive the ETA - Mike

With a simple GPS receiver, it's going to be difficult to get an ETA if you are on the road due to the different types of roads involved. I would go as far as to say that it's not going to work.

However, you could get a TomTom unit (I don't know if this fits your idea of low cost) and program your destination into it. The TomTom will then create a route to the destination and give you an ETA.

If you are writing some code to work with the ETA then TomTom have an API to get information out of the program and I'm pretty sure you can use it to get a load of information (including the location, destination, speed, direction and ETA) out of the unit.

If you go an buy a TomTom, make sure you choose the right unit and that can use the API with it. Some of the units are Linux based (and therefore open source) which may be useful. Potentially, you could write a program to run on the TomTom device itself.

If you are more Windows inclined than Unix then you could look at getting a SmartPhone or PDA phone which can also run TomTom and use a GPS unit with that.

Good luck!
