Hi,
I live in Wales and earlier this year purchased a T-Mobile Vario II phone complete with Copilot 6 software. I immediately downloaded the latest update from the ALK site and it is a superb bit of kit but...
A friend just purchased Copilot 6 for his Vario, went onto the ALK site and downloaded the latest update, installed it, went to find an address in Swansea and... Swansea was not in the database... So he tried Cardiff, Llanelli and so on. He went through the English names of cities and towns in Wales and discovered that none of them were in there. So he typed in Abertawe, which is Welsh for Swansea, and there it was.
Turns out he, by installing the latest update, appears that ALK have now given in to some kind of Welsh nationalism, even though 90% of Welsh people only speak English, and all the names in the latest map update in Wales are in Welsh. Great if you are one of the tiny handful who speak Welsh but for the majority of people that is just plain STUPID! Most people in Wales do not know what the Welsh name is of the town they live in let alone anywhere else.
My friend and I have the same phone so we have gone through the phone settings and the Copilot 6 settings one by one and our settings are identical. There is no option for Welsh or English and the only difference is that he has bought a slightly newer version of Copilot than mine so either the latest Wales' maps are only in Welsh or the update is in Welsh for Wales. Sheer stupidity.
If ALK do not get this sorted I will be buying Tom Tom ASAP. I have had Copilot less than a year, have loved it but now am afraid to update it so my maps are getting out of date.
Btw, my girlfriend is a fluent Welsh speaker and even she does not know most of the Welsh town names. How stupid can ALK be - they should get the English Welsh names back ASAP.
Anyhow, I am posting this as a warning to other Copilot users or to those who are thinking of buying it. If someone from ALK reads this then tell me I am wrong and tell me where the setting is to change the language because me and my mate cannot find it and do not think it exists. ALK - you have screwed up IMPO!
What's next - changing all Scottish maps from English to Gaelic!? |

Crikey I'm Welsh and all for most things but I agree that's just plain Daft, I know Swansea's Welsh name is Abertawe but it's every day name is Swansea plain and simple, if the Post office use Swansea then so should the navigation software.
Have you evidence that this is a result of pressure from Nationalists or could it just be a mistake as its not affected any other packages? _________________ Darren Griffin |

No, I am just assuming they have given in to the nationalists or had some meeting with someone who is a Welsh-speaker from the Assembly or something?
I am hoping that it is just a mistake.
I am hoping that it is a setting but, as I say, my friend and I have identical phones and Copilot software albeit his is a few months newer so... you draw your own conclusions.
There is no language setting we can find. All his Welsh place names are in Welsh. Nuts. |

That is the same version that both my friend and I have.
Just chatting with him now he thinks it is not the software version but the latest maps that come with the software. This would make sense. |

My Tom Tom GO720 computer voice navigated me "towards Abertawe" (pronounces it Abertor) and I have yet to decipher what she's saying around Cardiff - last time I delivered there, I asked somebody for the Welsh for Cardiff and it wasn't anything like what she was saying!
Near my home is Caernarvon Road which she pronounces as Chayernarv'n (to almost rhyme with Sayonara). But the GO understood my pronunciation of Pontardawe (dowy) in speech recognition - got it first time too.
Edit by DennisN - I can't wait to get a delivery to Ystrad Mynach, which another driver I knew used to pronounce "Why strad Mine atch" !!! _________________ Dennis

Nope he has the same phone as me, same version of Copilot as me and his settings are identical in both Copilot and the phone. Onlt difference we can see is that he must have newer maps. |
