I have a TomTom Go 500 that will be three years old in October. Buy and large I am very happy with the unit but obviously after three years the map supplied with the unit is getting a little out of date...

As my driving tends to be over familiar roads I finds some of the errors a little annoying like driving across fields where the new bypass is missing or being asked to leave a motorway at a works access only exit (I'm sure plod will love that one)!

I have looked at purchasing a new map and nearly took the plunge while the maps were on offer last month but then I went away on holiday for a long weekend and when I got back they had gone up 20%!

Due to my current financial position the decision to spend £40 on a map is not a decision I take lightly and was wondering if anyone had any idea how often TomTom plan on updating their maps? (Obviously I don't want to shell out £40 on an out of date product here).

Also, once purchased is it not possible to get live (or at lease still breathing) updates through software like TomTom Home? And if not is this not a good idea?

Wayne, The new version of TomTom software does indeed allow live updates to the map data via TomTom Home. Currently only the new t20 and 520 devices have this software and capability.

No doubt given time the new software will roll out across the existing product range as happened with version 5 and 6, the big question is when.

I would wait a while and watch the situation with respect to the new version 7 software, then purchase a compatible map. You don't want to spend your money now and find that your new map won't work with the new map share features of the version 7 software. - Mike
