Hi everyone, first of all id like to say that I am not too familiar with all of these unlock codes etc..
I had a problem with my micro SD/Trans Flash card so I went out and bought another one. As I did not have a Map DVD with my unit I borrowed it from someone else with the same unit. When I put the maps on with MapSource it goes on to tell me that the maps will not be unlocked to the GPS. And so when I switch the unit on, it tells me to connect to a computer and load maps.
How do I solve this problem.
Thanks in advance...

you need to either buy your own map-unlock code or contact garmin regarding your original card

i'm guessing that the unlock code may be different for the dvd as for the card? best bet is to contact garmin, they're always very helpful with stuff like this

What map version was on your original card? If it was v7 or v8 and the DVD is v9 you will have to buy a v9 unlock code from Garmin before you can upload the maps.
You'll also need to copy the Poi and Voice folders from the back-up of the original card that you made to your pc. If you didn't make a back-up and you can't access them from the original card it may be possible to copy these folders from another unit's card. _________________ Anita

yes, you can - it's just the maps you cannot copy/transfer

Thanks for the clarification, MaFt.
I couldn't see why you shouldn't be able to copy the other folders from another unit but, as I've never tried it, I didn't want to state it as fact. _________________ Anita

i've copied poi files from my nuvi to the i3 as it's quicker than waiting for poi loader to process the gpx files!
also, i remember using a different voice file from another unit when i was trying to help ash10 with his voice software

More importantly, I would contact Garmin about the "problem" with the original card - they are likely to want you to send it into them, but they are more than likely to send you back a "fixed" card, which may even contain newer maps (even on a unit under warranty).
Garmin use the "Secure" area of the micro Secure Digital card to store the unlock information that associates the map with that SatNav unit, which is why copying the data (that you can access) does not work.
Alternatively, Garmin may be able to provide you with the code on the yellow slip for your unit, which would allow you to use the MapSource DVD (as long as it's the same map version as your unit shipped with) to copy the maps onto your new card and get them working with your i3. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

I've just used Ghost 8 and a card reader to move the contents of the 256mb transflash in my i2 onto a newly purchased, blank 512mb Kingston card, and to back up both cards as I wanted to play with the custom voice files...worked perfectly.
I've yet to find something that ghost can't duplicate 100%, TBH.
This is with V9, and firmware 2.70 and the new one. OK, the first time I fired it up with the new card it said "insert card with map data", but I popped it out and back in with the power on, and it's been fine ever since. Quite happy. |

Did the i2 originally ship with v9 maps? If it's been upgraded to v9 maps (via a DVD), the unlock file controlling access to the maps will be within a file in the SD card, and not within the secure area of the SD card, which will hold the unlock code for the original shipped maps (ie possible v8 maps).
This is not a major problem for Garmin as the unlock code file still uniquely ties the maps to that particular SatNav unit, but does make the maps easier to copy maps supplied by Garmin on SD card. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |
