|
|
Hi Folks,
I enabled SBAS on the SIRFstar III chipset i my ETEN X500 PDA using SIRFtech. By the way, the PDA has the SIRF Instant Fix feature.
It worked beautifully for a couple of days, receiving PRN120 strongly and applications reported Differential GPS fixes very easily.
Unfortunately for the last couple of days I can't seem to receive any EGNOS satellite at all. Normal GPS still works fine.
I checked with SIRFtech and all the settings seem intact.
I suspect either :
- The receiver has stopped processing SBAS due to a bug, or
- EGNOS simply isn't working, or is at reduced strength.
Any ideas? Can anyone else in the UK receive PRN120 at the moment ?
Thanks,
Steve |

Hi Steve,
I have seen the EGNOS signal before on my MIO A701 in the UK (before Christmas), and managed to get a differential fix.
I have also been trying again recently (last week), and I cannot even see the signal from 33 (which I think is PRN120), let alone use it for a fix.
Last time I looked at the egnos website, there were no planned interruptions, or service outages.
Having just done a hard reeboot on my device, I was not sure if I did not have something set up right or whether the sattelite was not working.
Looks as though we are either both really unlucky, or the sattelite is not working.
I will keep posting updates here as and when the situation changes
Cheers

Interesting to hear your experience, Neil.
Mine just gets weirder!
- For several days after enabling EGNOS on my new pocket PC, I received PRN120 strongly and got good DGPS fixes.
- Then it just stopped. For several more days I could not get any EGNOS satellites at all despite no outage being reported.
- Then I started receiving PRN126 strongly, but no sign of PRN120 at all!
- Now I get PRN120 again and no PRN126.
It's all very odd - The measurements are all being made from exactly the same place ! I wonder what you make of it. Are they playing with the SVs without telling anyone ?

EGNOS is not fully operational yet, and major changes were made to the signal last year, which rendered some versions of SiRF software inoperable with EGNOS.
I would not suggest it's used for mobile applications in the UK in any case, due to it being served from a geostationary satellite.

'They' are not obliged to tell anyone at all, it's not a service that is in an operational state. _________________ G1NTX AFRIN LRPS |

If your problems and observations relate to the period 03-09 March 2008, there were signal outages during planned maintenance on both 120 & 126.
They do their best to inform of these outages - see here |
