There isn't a 20mph camera outside MY house - how do you want it submitted, address or Lat/Long?

If there is no 70MPH camera there, please remember to submit that too!

I would add every local school - both directions from 500 YDS - no cameras are ever positioned near schools - but its a good safety net, perhaps slowing the motorist down this way might catch on - GET REAL if there is no camera why do you need to know the location? - Mike

All the schools around here you will be stationary for a long time due to all the idiot parents parking anywhere they feel like. Speed cameras would be a waste of time, as they don't flash at parked cars!!

Kids should walk to school or use public transport/taxis as provided by the local education authority or council.

Do you think this new category of Pnotcameras will qualify me for a free lifetime membership? Incidentally, there's a primary school entrance 150 yards along the road too. Maybe we could have a new category for yellow zig zag road markings - sort of a reminder of where Pnotcameras may not be. Is there by any chance a category for Pnotschoolrunchaoticparkingplaces?

Nothing like a sensible debate is there ? - And this is turning into ........ Confused

Some very valid points have come out during some of the posts, some very blinkered views, and some downright ridiculous 8O

I actually AGREE with the principle that there is no need to be warned about an empty box, but out of all the sarcastic and sniping coments from some, NO-ONE has been able to answer the question that is the crux of the matter :

If you are driving down an unfamiliar road and see what appears to be a camera at the roadside, How do you tell what it is - If it isn't on the database - YOU CAN'T !

It "could" be a dummy, it "might" not be be.

The database compilers may know what it is, and whoever submitted it's details will probably know what it is - but YOU won't" !

All that was suggested was that those cameras that have been submitted as dummy cameras, instead of just being deleted from the database forever, COULD be included on a separate POI file that COULD be downloaded by anyone that felt the need and had the capacity in their device.

So come on - what IS the answer Question

And just to provoke a little more debate Rolling Eyes :

Let's not totally dismiss the SAFETY camera angle on this :
The Local Council may have placed the dummy camera in an attempt to reduce speed and therefore accidents, on a strecth of road where the accident stat's are comparatively high. Maybe they can't afford a proper camera yet but still want to reduce accidents - so the inclusion of that dummy camera on some Sat Nav systems COULD have the desired effect.
Maybe the Council WILL convert it to a "proper" camera when finances allow - maybe they won't - Who Knows Question

There will not be a release for dummy cameras or pretend cameras. The speed camera database was, is and will be a database of static speed cameras and active mobile sites. No more, no less.

If someone sees a dummy camera and subsequently reports it because they weren't warned by the database then when I get around to processing that particular submission then it will be rejected.

Feel free to make your own POI file of dummy cameras and distribute it as you feel fit but PocketGPSWorld.com will not be doing one.

Laughing OK, forgetting the funnies for a moment ...

That's exactly the point - at the moment "Dummy" cameras, or those reported to be / believed to be / known to be ??? are NOT on the database
Other than the cameras in the variable speed limit areas on the M25 & M42, do we have any examples?

It's a bunch of years since I retired from the council highways department, but for what it's worth - when we first put up Gatsos, there wasn't the money to have the cameras at every site, so we started off with something like a dozen sites, but only four cameras. It was public knowledge that not all the boxes contained cameras, but never publicised which ones and publicised that cameras would be rotated around the boxes at whim.

So far as I'm aware, there are still more boxes than cameras (and more cameras than film). But I don't go along with the idea that "the council" puts up dummies - they're not that bright and they're not that rich. So let's all forget a new category and concentrate on reporting new and changed ones which ARE there.
