Double menu entries after backup

Anyone know how to get rid of double entries in the Menu system for a Toshiba e740 using PPC 2003?

I have had to backup my system on a couple of occassions. I have 2 backup files, Backup 1 & 2, on different cards (Flash and SD). Backup 1 is really back to basics and is the configuration when I first got the PDA complete with TomTom navigator files, etc. Backup 2 gets updated fairly regularly with the lastest configuration, including latest contacts, calander, etc. I have had to use both backups recently when the PDA froze. I restored using Backup 1 initially, and then a few days later restored using Backup 2 (to get my contacts back).

Problem is that for some reason I now seem to have double entries for everything in the Menu selection in System settings. The system will not let me deselect (un tick) those already in the Menu - I get a message saying this item cannot be moved, and I cannot add to the Menu bar because there are now 9 (apparently fixed) items. Could this have happened because I used 2 different backup files?

Any help on how to get back to normal gratefully received!

take the file explorer, and go to the \windows\start menu folder. There you can remove the duplicates

Thank you. Seems to have fixed the problem.

Was the fault caused by using 2 differently titled back-up files?

My theory (may be wrong) is that backup/restore do not work with file names but with object identifiers (GUIDs), and sometimes these change so you can end up with multiple files with the same name but they are still different.

Don't worry too much about it - there are more important things in life than the intricacies of the PocketPC Operating System...

My understanding is that for shortcuts (including the Start Menu) nothing as fancy (or useful) as a GUID is used.

The best way to restore a full backup is to hard reset first, then restore - otherwise you're potentially restoring over a load of bits that are already on the machine.

Following a hard reset, various shortcuts are created in the \Windows\Start Menu hierarchy. To make things more complicated, moving things on and off of the Start Menu moves things in and out of subfolders.

A plausible algorithm on restoring after a hard reset is to check if a shortcut you're about to restore already exists. If so, don't restore that shortcut (you might possibly land up creating an unwanted RAM copy of a large file in ROM if you do). If it doesn't already exist, restore it. [I'm not entirely convinced this stage is necessary - you shouldn't attempt to back up and restore ROM files, nor is restoring to a different ROM version to the version you backed up from usually supported - it's near invariably a bad idea].

When you've restored everything, you need to go through the entire \Windows\Start Menu hierarchy and look for duplicates - using the information in the backup file to decide which duplicates you should delete.

Sprite took some time to get this right in Sprite Backup - though I don't know precisely what algorithm they are using. Other backup utilities might not get this right.
