Hi all,
Just found the site and it's very good for everything i'm trying to do. As i know absolutley nothing about gps and i've just bought one to go to france this year.
I wonder if some kind person could help. I have just bought a dell axim 3 with tom tom navigator 2 and i cannot get it to work. The software wont load onto my computer and the activesync will not connect. The gps is a haicom hi-204s series.
Could anyone walk me through setting up as i am starting to tear my already limited amount of hair out.
Kind regards
Tony |

Bit of a noob myself, & this may not be related at all but are you behind a Firewall? This may stop the PDA & PC connecting.

We need to get the Axim working with ActiveSync before we can go further.
What version of ActiveSync do you have (Help | About) and is it a Serial or USB Cradle? When you drop the Axim into the cdale (which needs to eb plugged into the PC!) what happens? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks for the replies up to now guys,
I do not have a cradle it's just usb cable.
The version ofactive sync is 3.7, and the computer is running windows 98.
I have installed disc with outlook 2002 and active sync on it, which now takes over the e-mail which i dont like as it wont let me use mail washer.
The computer and the pda now see each other is this what i am aiming for.
I'm now trying to load tom tom 2 but i dont know where to put it. It gives some options but there does not seem to be enough space to put it on.
Will this be the maps and do i put them on the sd card.
Thanks a lot Tony |

MailWasher should still work, just stop Outlook from automatically collecting email?
Anyway, with the Axim connected and ActiveSync 'seeing' it, launch the TomTom Installer CD and run setup, it will ask where you want the TomTom application to install, choose Main Memory (it is installing on the Axim) and follow the prompts. The next stage is the map install which should be to a storage card. _________________ Darren Griffin |

You only need to keep and use OL2002 if you wish to synchronise your contacts, tasks and emails to your Axim. Outlook is a better mail client than Outlook Express _________________ Darren Griffin |

I've tried to install to main memory but it said there is not eough space. I part installed it before, could this be the problem and how do i delete it.
Would i be aswell doing a soft restart and trying again.
Thanks again

Have you installed any other software? You may be better to do a hard reset and start over again. if you do, remove the Axim from the sync cable and in ActiveSync select File | Delete Partnership to avoid any issues when you come to connect it again. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi again,
Done the hard reset, and it was fine, but trying to load the maps now and it keeps coming up with an error message about the disc and then it says its performed an illegal operation and will shut down. There does'nt seem to be anything wrong with the cd with the software on, any ideas.
Thanks again

Hi,
Looks like Darren sorted you out so far.
Not sure about the Cd error doesn't sound good.
You could try undocking your dell and soft reset it connecting it again and run tomtom again and try adding your maps to your storage card (it could be cd install is not picking/starting up ActiveSync).

Thanks wizzo,
I'll try that now, i'm getting to the stage where i'll try anything, the thing is not gonna beat me.
I've just emailed tom tom to see if i could download the maps off them as i have bought the software and they have activated it, so they know it's paid for. I'll have to wait to see if i get a reply.
Thanks again for the input

Tony when you run the map install, choose the "Install software to a folder on the PC" option and see if that runs through OK. If it does then you can manually copy that folder to the Axim's storage card. Let me know how you get on? _________________ Darren Griffin |
