It is interesting looking at the driving forces behind events. If Navteq are to be believed then the game of football is responsible for producing mapping data for South Africa. I would hope that there are far more sound reasons for mapping out a country, but if not I am happy to get the maps anyway...

NAVTEQ Releases Full Coverage Map of South Africa
Company Prepares to Meet Digital Map Needs During FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa

NAVTEQ (NYSE: NVT), a leading global provider of digital map data for location-based solutions and vehicle navigation, has announced a full coverage map of South Africa. Included in the data set is over 450,000 km of roads, enabling customers to create navigation solutions for the entire country.

The full coverage product, which reaches virtually 100% of South Africa’s population, includes over 25,000 points of interest including high value listings such as approximately 3,900 restaurants and 2,100 hotels. Customers integrating the map into consumer and business applications will have access to data representing over 4,955 named places in the country.

“Because of the strong growth in digital map based applications, NAVTEQ has significantly enhanced its coverage of South Africa. Moving forward, we plan on continuing to develop our coverage in South Africa to meet evolving requirements,” stated George Filley, Vice President of Product Management, for NAVTEQ. For example, NAVTEQ has made a commitment to provide expanded coverage to support navigation needs during the FIFA World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2010, enabling navigation between all featured venues and providing detailed information on those destinations.

The NAVTEQ database now includes virtually all navigable and named roads in South Africa, with full verification of all function class roads from one to four – ranging from high volume, controlled access roads to residential streets. >From a field office located in Johannesburg a team of NAVTEQ geographic analysts are working on providing more of the country with Detailed Coverage - NAVTEQ’s highest database specification with up to 160 attributes on every segment of road. Twenty three South African cities already have detailed coverage.

This is not available to end users yet.

NavTeq have mapped the country and it is now available for SatNav companies to use. The individual companies need to make a commercial decision as to when or if they will include South Africa in thier mapsets.

Did they claim to be the first? Actually Navteq are not the first in the market.

There is a very nice piece of software from a company called HandyMap. This is the local office (I think) of Matatlas, a Chines company.

Whatever, they use mapping data sourced from Business Connection (ZA company), as likely does Navteq.

Can't be bothered to find the URL. Just Google for Handymap and maybe add South Africa.

The latest version is called HandyMap AI.

Just one tip for visitors, be very careful not to follow any routing from the airport to Sandton that goes through Alexander Township (Arkwright Road), which the program will take you through if you choose shortest!

To be on the safe side, choose "highway preferred". Longer but safer if you don't know Joburg.
