Hi

I have an O2 Xda and would like to be able to use a GPS when flying a Helicopter and also whilst driving my car. P Confused lease can you recommend the best set up and possible manufacturer for a GPS Receiver.

Many Thanks

Unfortunately Adrian you will be very limited to what you can use because you only have one storage slot, and that will be needed for maps, so a mobile or Bluetooth solution will be out.

Take a look at this page
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/gpshardware.php

If you look at the second table you'll see what sort of GPS Receivers are available. All are of the mice kind which plug into the accessory socket in-car, and might be a problem in aeroplanes if you don't have one of these sockets.

Peter has created a DIY battery pack which allows you to plug one of these receivers into a battery pack whilst flying. You can see it here http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/batterypack1.php

Check out our Car Powered section in our GPS Hardware Reviews available at
The main GPS Receivers will be the Leadtek 9531, Leadtek 9532, RoyalTek Sapphire, and Holux GM-210. All receivers come in at around £100 without software/maps, add another £100+ for software/maps which will give you street navigation maps, and you'll need ot add more for aviation style maps.http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/menu_gpshardware1.php which will give you reviews of these products.

Adrian,

Another solution would be to buy a traditional handheld gps such as the Garmin Geko 201 (reviewed here) and connect it to your PDA using a serial cable.

This gives you teh advantage of having the PDA and the GPS powered seperately. giving you more battery life for the PDA where there are no power outlets.

Thanks very much I think the best bet would be to go for the Garmin Geko 201 as this would have more use in other areas.

Regards

Adrian
