I have now got a tom tom 500 but i want to be able to put customizable mune scrrens on like I can with the 300 but I also want to be able to use the phone capability at the same time. Using the sdk website there is no mobile phone icon. Does anyone know of a way of doing this please! 8O
Any help is greatly appreciated! _________________ TomTom 300

Good question. I'm gonna have a go with menu builder tonight with my 500 so I'll need to know what to do about icons that exist on current menus but don't show on the menu builder. Mobile is not there but maybe there are others too. I guess there must be a simple change you can make to the mnu file after creating the custom one. |

Works a treat. After using the online menu builder I just made final tweaks by moved lines around in the mnu and now it's perfect. Here's my mnu for my 500.

No its not, mate
Basically the .mnu file is just a text file with a different three letter extension on the end of the name.
All you do is open notepad in Windows (the simplest of text editors), copy and paste one of the examples (like the one above) into the blank window, make any changes you want, (although you probably won't know what changes you want to make until you've loaded it onto your TomTom once!) and then save it with "save as...".
It will ask you what you want to call it, and where to save it; call it "tomtom" and it will automatically call it "tomtom.txt".
Then find it with My Computer or Windows Explorer, right click on it and select "rename". Change the ".txt" to ".mnu", click on OK if you get a box popping up warning you about changing an extension - don't worry, that's just nanny Microsoft!) and there you are.
You can then open it in Notepad to make any changes, by right clicking on it, selecting "open" and then when Windows throws up another panicky box saying it doesn't know how to open it, just tick "select the program from a list" and then choose notepad on the next page.
Its actually a lot easier and quicker to do than it was for me to try to describe it |

The menu builder does not have the sub menu for hands free operation on the 500/700.
If I use the menu builder to change the other screens will this sub menu be affected and if it is can someone tell me how to maintain it.
thanks |

There isn't any access to items on the phone menu, navigation menus, roadblock menu etc... Only the main buttons to navigate to these menus. |

If you use the menu builder (which does have the icon to access the mobile phone menu), it will not affect the sub menu - which cannot be altered. |

I couldn't find the mobile phone icon on the menu builder so I just added Guided Tour at the appropriate place and then manually replaced it later after I'd created the mnu.
i.e. replace this...
MENUITEM|TASK_TUTORIAL|
with this...
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_PHONE| |

I didn't know about that program at the time - wish I had! With hindsight there is one significant improvement I would make to that program so maybe this also applies to the one you linked to also...
I wanted to be sure that I didn't add or remove any icons that were on the original menus - I just wanted to shuffle them around to suit my needs. So I started out by going through all the menus and writing the icons down on paper. Then I used the menu builder to put them all the appropriate place. What would have been really useful would be a facility at the start (before you build any menus) for selecting all of the icons you want to use (getting rid of all the unwated ones from the picker). Then when you start building the menus the picker would only show the ones not already added to a menu. You would then be able to drag and drop from the picker to a menu page or from one page to another. When the picker is empty you know you are done! |

Hi JLee - I understand... You probably have discovered this already... At the moment you can start dropping the icons into place (as you have written them down), and then if you click "Only show unused buttons", it will show ones that you haven't transferred to the menus. When you have finished, there may be a few which are still shown in the list which you haven't written down (because they aren't part of the original TT menus).
Hope you understood that?!?!
Happy New Year! :D |
