Hi all,

Making a leap into the unknown world of PDA's and trying to decide between the Ipaq 2210 and 5550. I'm a helicopter pilot and am considering replacing my Garmin Pilot 3, can anyone reccomend hardware and software to run with either of the Ipaq's. At this stage after reading some reviews, I seem to be leaning toward the Emtec reviever with Winpilot for software. Maps need to be available for Australia, but I have no problem buying from overseas. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

I think in terms of the iPAQ choice there is little difference between the 2210 and 5500. It depends what else you plan to do with the device. The 5000 range is more for business, whilst the 2000 range is more home based. The 2000 has two slots for SD and CF which might swing it, that and being a fair bit cheaper.

I think the 2210 is the machine for me, probably with the Emtec reciever, now I just have to wait for the supply problems in Aus to fix themselves. Does anyone know if Bluetooth effects aeronautical instruments?

In theory Bluetooth doesn't, although it is on the RF (Radio Frequency) so it could do. Certainly aviation organisations frown upon it being used in the cockpit but there are no immediate bans that I'm aware of.

Tom,

I think you are right in selecting the 2210. Unless you need WiFi the 2210 really outperforms the 5450 in both performance and battery life. I assume that the same will be true of the 5550. Though it may just be battery life that is much better.

If you are in a light aircraft and have a constant power source it may not matter too much. In which case the main difference may be the screen size which is about 1/4 inch (sorry 51mm) smaller width and height.

I havent found this to be an issue in any applications I have had for the PDAs.

You will also find the Emtac and excellent GPS receiver giving you 6-8 hours of battery life. On par with the 2210.
