Hi All
I am considering getting the Axim X5 Basic with a CF gps + external arial to use with TomTom (I will use a 128SD card for maps). What I am concern about is whether the performance of the X5 Basic is up to it.
Any thoughts or suggestions on my setup...
Many Thanks in advance

The Axim is more than capable of running Tom Tom and your suggested set-up will work fine _________________ Darren Griffin |

Also have a serious think about whether you want to go for the Advanced instead.
Yes it is £60 more but a cradle is £30 and you get double the RAM and more ROM and a faster processor.
But if you've made the decision that you don't need these things or the £60 is too much, then as Darren says the Basic will do fine.

I have a Dell Advanced, with the same setup as you are thinking, it works fine, you just need to have the latest version of TTN2.
I will work on the Basic version, but like Nick, for an extra £60 you are getting a whole lot more. _________________ Chorlie

Thanks for all the input and suggestions on the Axim Advanced..
The reasons for choosing the X5 Basic ara:
a) I am on a limited budget.
b) I can't see myself using the PPC for anything else. I already own a Palm, a laptop and a desktop. The only app that I use on the Palm is ultraSoft Money. For the PPC I can't see myself using anything other than Pocket Money.
c) Since I'll be using a 128M SD for storage the 32Mb on the Basic model should be OK. That is assuming that TTN2 is usable in 32Mb.
My main concern is really the route finding on the Axim Basic. Since it is 25% slower than the Advanced, does it mean that it will takes 25% longer to find a route??? What is the average time for TTN2 to find a route on the Axim advanced? Would you notice the 25% extra delay??
Many Thanks in advance

I think as you are going to rely on the SD card, that will be the thing that seems to effect the timings more than anything (yes you would notice the processor speed - but not as much as if you had a poor SD card)
Have a look at the other threads concerning SD cards and you'll see an example is this one
