Does anyone know where I can download an uptodate POI of French safety cameras, similar to the pocketGPS database?

Also:

There's the continental set in the speed camera files on the PocketGPS site.

And there's this lot:

http://www.alertegps.com/Download.asp?a=ar&s=&f=tomtom Click on "Télécharger le fichier"

Seemed pretty good on my recent trip to Switzerland.

Just back from a trip to France with all the speed camera POI's mentioned.

In all honesty they are not a lot of use, as yet, because there are very few listed AND the Frenchies are far more likely to set up mobile speed traps which, unlike here, are NEVER located.

In around 3,500 miles of travel, albeit not round Paris and the north into Belgium where most of the 'located' cameras are, I did not pass through one 'located' speed camera.

HOWEVER, I did see 4 mobile speed traps and 2 Police/Douane roadside checks.

I was walking into the local town and watched two Gendarmes setup their speed check equipment under the shade of an obscuring tree!! They were just packing up when I walked back 2 hrs. later.

On the other 3 speed checks I was towing my caravan in small towns and villages, and passed through OK (received a 'flash' from a Frenchie coming the other way, on one), but they'd stopped a caravanner in one of the checks.

Be aware that these mobile, unlocated, speed checks are far more common than the fixed camera ones in France. Also they are starting to build in fixed location speed cameras at the entrance to many towns and villages. These are different from our's and comprise a grey box ~1.3m high, positioned on the ground, with 3 'windows' in, and often a notice at the beginning of the town, 'Radars Fréquentes'.

So, you basically need to adhere to the speed limits; 50kph in towns unless sign-posted 30kph. Even the Frenchies seem to be doing it now!!!

Hi

Thought I read somewhere that using any form of radar location indicating device was illegal on the continent and could result in the indicating device (tomtom) being confiscated. Has any one heard or had any experience of this ?

It seems that only the radar "detecting" ones are illegal. GPS locators are apparently OK.

What's the difference between having a database driving round the country with a very good memory?

Anyway I've just picked up the French database from gpsaandco.com which I've just checked and it has the couple of cameras that I know of fairly precisely located (one of which sits nicely under the favourite I'd setup last time I passed it). Will be very useful as I've got 2 trips to France in July.

They do seem to be hotting up over there now - the local notaire to our village had just got done doing 90kph through a town (50kph denoted by the red outline on the town sign).

Incidentally what's the equivalent to the national limit on their single carriageway country roads - even the locals don't seem to be sure.

90kph unless shown otherwise.

A 50kph limit is indicated by the village/hamlet name sign, edged in red, and exiting shows the village/hamlet name sign, edged in black with a diagonal red line crossing it, which means back to 90kph, unless otherwise shown..

I've noticed there are some instances where a 70kph sign is shown on the approach to a village.

It's easy to make mistakes and if something unexpected happens, and you are exceeding the limit, you may end up in trouble.

Personally I keep within the limits, long distances can be covered in good time, unlike here in GB, plus of course you can take in the French countryside. Smile
