I'm sure that I've seen this matter discussed on these forums somewhere but now that I want to do it, I can't find it, sorry

So I have my iPaq, GPS attached and it's in it's sync cradle, can my PC get to the GPS signal in any way?

It's possible, but I don't think through the sync cable, check out this message which enables you to access a Navman sleeve as a GPS Receiver using the Infra Red port.

Someone (was it Dave?) mentioned IrPass recently. The web site he mentioned I saved in my favourites, so I can give you the address, but I'm having trouble accessing it. The address doesn't seem to be in the DNS any more. Google's cache of the home page of the web site (which makes less sense than it could without the graphics, is here.

I'm unclear what setup you're talking about. If it's the 5450 one mentioned in your signature, then you could use your 5450's Bluetooth - though which COM port are you going to use? I think you're going to need either a serial connection to the iPAQ's serial port, or an Infrared connection from your PC to your iPAQ. I don't think you can use the USB connection with IrPass. At that point, it may be easier to buy a USB Bluetooth device for your desktop machine!

You can certainly do it the otherway round pretty easily with the GlobalSat and either OziExplorer or Fugawi, as long as you have bluetooth on your PC.

Both Ozi and Fug have NMEA output which can be sent to the Bluetooth serial port. This can then be picked up by the PDA as if it had just come out of the GPS. There are a few protocol sentances missing but it will give you positioning info.
