Just wondered if I'm alone.

Have one of orignal TTGs - got it first week it came out. Its been great until it died whilst on holiday in France last week. I plugged it into the car charger and it went pop!
The 3A fuse in the charger went, and a faint burning smell came from behind the unit. Needless to say it is now completely unresponsive except for a green light on the front.

Anyone know what caused this and whether I can get TomTom to fix it? I bought it early July last year.

I don't know if its related but I did notice, whilst preping for my holiday, that after installing v5 whatever update, and giving the unit an overnight charge from the mains charger, the battery would run flat very quickly (i.e. 10mins or less). It still worked from the car charger when plugged in so I just used it as is whilst on holiday and figured I'd look into it when I got back. Now I have a dead box!

Any help or advice much appreciated.....

thx

AMcG.

You have the pink fuse........
The voltage dropper in the lead has short-circuited and given 12 volts to the GO Crying or Very sad It should only have 5 volts. Yu can check this with a multimeter rif you have one.

Second time this has been reported this week. Is it a temperature thing?

Get back to your suppier and get a new GO under guarantee. Don't accept a refurb unit. If they have no originals they will have to give you a 500 at least.

Try the supplier as it is their problem. You should also let TomTom know that their leads are still failing.

TomTom are on 0845 161 0009 - may be a queue....

Thx for that - was expansys who've been pretty helpful before. Will post back how I get on.....
By rights (according to CAB) I can reasonably expect it to last longer than 1 year and expect them to supply a new one.

Its a good point about temp - it was in the upper thirties in france, but i did have the a/c pumping....and no way did i leave it unattended in the car!

ha - so here's great customer service from expansys

expansys response - item was shipped on 6th July 04. You are reporting it on 18th July 05 so therefore its out of warranty and you have to contact TomTom. (It actually blew up on 2nd July 05 but I was in France until yesterday).
I quoted sale of goods act to them along lines of - goods were sold faulty and therefore entitled to replacement regardless of when fault developed (law says up to 6 years). I.e. the charger clearly had the problem inherent to its design, and was only a matter of time before it blew up. Was told that distance selling laws are different, and that they don't have to replace it, and anyway TomTom dont make this product anymore.
Suggestion was I call TomTom first, but they would check their returns department and let me know "how else they can help".

tomtom number - says "we are too busy right now call back later" - marvellous.

all in all a satifsactory treamtent - not.

strong letter to expansys in progress......otherwise its a holiday insurance job.

I was in Germany in May. Temp was 39 deg or so for 3 days and quite hot at other times. GO is OK, but I was not (often) using the car charger. I charged it overnight when possible.

I am off to Germany/Austria/Italy soon and am worried about this as I will be driving for many hours at a time and will have to use the charger!

I have it with me now and will describe it and hope someone can tell me if it is one of the safe chargers or not?

It is 9.5cm long, the connector part is lighter size then widens out near the rear.

There is a green led on the top rear.

Each side has 3 finger grip type mouldings?

On one side the top moulding is clear plastic with a number 2 on it.

There is a label on the underneath which says:

cigarette lighter adaptor
023818
FC CE tomtom
input: 12/24v (4D00.003)
output: 5v 2a
made in china

Am I safe Question

Thnx

The clear plastic with the 2 on it is the fuse. You "should" be OK. You have the newer one.

I've got the pink one too. Its nearly a year old now and I'm taking no chances 8O . I've just ordered a new lead from TomTom. Presumably it will be the new design and therefore safe.

TM
Is the new lead under warrenty from TT or are new buying a new one from them?
The reason i ask is that they told me there was no problem with my Cerise 3 amp one.
