hi first time ive used this forum does anyone know of a kit to charge tom tom permanantly while in car without using the cig lighter socket and is this safe to do so or will it damage tom tom would like to have it only charging when ignition on thanks to anyone who can help

brodit do a mount like what you want, costs about £40...or you can plug the tomtom car charger plug into a car charger extension lead and hard wire the extension lead...

just looked at the brodit kit but only want a cable cig lighter ext is ok but was hopeing to make a tidy and hidden job of it as tomtom will fit in centre console for most of the time (and works fine )

I have connected an in-line cigarette socket adapter into a spare fuse (you could just splice into the wiring for your existing cigarette lighter socket) and plugged the original TT car charger into that. The whole thing is velcro-ed behind the dash.

Whatever you do, do not try to wire directly from the car wiring to a DC plug on the TomTom, as the cig. lighter adapter reduces the car's 12 Volts down to 5 Volts for the TT.

12 Volts up the TT=instant death (to the TomTom!).

Yup, that's basically what I did too (although I wired my socket back to a spare fuse in the fusebox).
Then I made a custom mount too... (Pics here)
