Hi

I work for the West Midland Safari Park in Worcestershire, my boss and myself both own TomTom GO's and we happened to noticed that the park is not listed in the POI's although other safari parks are. This then transpired to me being given the task of seeing how to get ourselves added to the POI database.

Therefore, my question is, how would I go about this? Is there a central company that controls the POI database on the products from TomTom or Navman and Garmin for that matter or do the individual companies compile their own databases?

Any pointers in the right direction would be gratefully received.

Richard

Hi GeekPride,

Welcome to the forum! Thumbs Up

I guess you’re talking about the built-in POIs that come as default with the SatNav packages like TomTom? If you are, then each individual company is responsible for their own built-in in POIs, although they may use partners that specialise in GIS and POI data.

Have you looked at our (PocketGPSWorld’s) own download page? There is a POI for Zoos, created by Simon Quinn, and the West Midland Safari Park is including in that POI

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtompoi.php

In particular:
http://www.pocketgpspoi.com/reviews/tomtompoi/Zoos.zip

Now, what you could do is create a special POI for the West Midland Safari Park and have that as a downloadable file for visitors to install into their own SatNav package.

As a special offer to you, I can create a TomTom POI for the West Midland Safari Park with the main entrance, car parks, and any other feature for free. Email me for further details. Thumbs Up

Regards,

You could speak to Teleatlas and Navtech - they are responsible for the POI data and mapping shipped with the majority of satnav systems in the UK.

I'm honestly not sure what kind of reception you would get though.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses guys and the warm welcome

chris_w - I basically had the same thought but was curious as to what criteria they use to decide what gets included and what doesn't and hence can you submit your attraction as a worthwhile inclusion.

Privateer - Yes I was refering to the standard POI's that come with the hardware and I must admit I hadn't thought of including it as a downloadable option from the website, but it is a very good idea. I would be grateful if you could create the POI for me and I am sure a free entrance pass or two could find their way to you in exchange. Is there any way of making one that is compatable for all Sat Nav hardware or is it asking far too much for there to be a common standard?

Unfortunately, each SatNav package is different and uses different file structures for POIs. TomTom is one of the most common SatNav packages and the one that I’m most familiar with, hence my offer to create the TomTom POI. Other packages that I know can take POIs are:
ALK CoPilot
Navman SmartST V3
PowerLOC Destinator V3.

Once the TomTom POI has been created it can be converted to other file structures but I’d need to read up on the specifications for the icons. That may take some time.

Please contact me via email (click on my email button) and let me know what you want in the POI, e.g. main entrance, delivery entrance, car park, coach park, etc. I’m afraid that I don’t know the West Midland Safari Park, so I don’t know what you’ve got that you would like to appear on a POI for the general public You might even want two POIs, one for staff and suppliers, and one for the general public.

You can even use some TomTom GOs as a hands-free device for your mobile phone, so I can include telephone numbers as well for each POI.

Regards,

I would contact them to discuss it, with something like this I doubt you'll have much of a problem - the likes of Chester Zoo etc. are listed, it's a little strange they missed you.

I've included site url's for you here :-

www.teleatlas.com

www.navteq.com

Also with Privateer's location info you'll be making the job much easier for them. Putting the POI files on your website for download as well would be fantastic - I just wish more companies thought like this.

IMHO there isn't enough POI data available like this in standard sat nav packages anyway and some big steps need taking to improve it.

I have three kids and I use my TOMTOM for days out with them - it would be great if you could bring up a list of possible days out with a profile on each (cost, facilites etc...) choose the one you want then route to it.

It would be interesting to see how you get on with Teleatlas and Navteq - keep us posted.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for the links Chris

I have phoned Teleatlas and spoke to guy there who was extremely helpful and has passed the details onto the relevant department so we should be listed in a future update.

I have also contacted Navteq through their online contact form, but as yet haven't heard anything back from them.

I agree with you that more companies should be encouraged to start providing POI information especially with the huge increase in popularity of in car satellite navigation and if any other businesses are thinking of doing the same I can confirm the system works, well at least with Teleatlas if nothing else.

I would like to thank yourself and Robert for your help with this, it should gain me some brownie points with the Directors... hmmm wonder if now is good time to tap them for a pay rise.
