Map datum

I don't fully understand the manual re map datum.

I have my eTrex Legend set to Ordnance Survey GB at the present.

I intend to travel in Holland, and have installed maps and waypoints from the European Roads & rec disk.

Do I need to alter the datum settings for the GPS to work properly in Holland? If so what settings should I use?

Hi Bluestar2005,

If you look at any decent map (and the Ordnance Survey maps are some of the best) then you should see the Datum that should be used with the map. Sometimes you even get the position format as well. E.g.:

Britain
Map Datum: ORD SRVY GB
Pos Format: British Grid

Jersey (Channel Islands)
Map Datum: European 1950
Pos Format: UTM Grid Zone 30

If the map doesn’t specify a Datum then you can try WGS84. WGS84 should also be used when using a hand held GPS unit with a computer running SatNav applications as most SatNav applications use WGS84 for their electronic map data.
