For all TomTom 4.3" and 5" widescreen models, actual screen size is not important, they are all 480x272 pixels resolution and so that's the native size for the spashscreens too.
For the old "NAV2" machines, the startup and shutdown screens have to be exactly those dimensions and in .bmp format and are called splashw.bmp and suspendw.bmp respectively.
However, for the new "NAV3" models that use MyTomTom (such as the VIA125) it's not so important. You can use any size you like, and in bmp or jpg format. Images that are too small will be scaled up, and images that are the wrong aspect ratio will be cropped. They can have any name you like.
The new 6" screen Start 60 is the only exception as it has a high resolution 800x480 screen, but it works just the same - any size image can be used (from 1x1 upto 1280 x 1024)
--------
For anoraks:
On the old small-screen models it was 320x240 pixels and the startup screen was called splash.bmp.
On very early models and software, the image had to be rotated through 90 degrees before uploading it to the device, but that ended with v7 software IIRC. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-)
