Sitting in my drive, GPS set to normal, it can sometimes place me in the next road. Using WAAS it always positions me correctly. QED

EGNOS/WAAS & V 2.9 is, I think the most accurate yet! On the link to the multimap below is a juction that I use often. Over the level crossing and turn left. The Wards - turning left onto Wards Road.

Below Wards Road is a track that runs for a few hundred meters on the other side of the railway line. Before, If I was on navigation mode (GPS normal) the i3 would always show I was on Wards Road after turning left. If, however I was on map view mode, the i3 would show me on the track until the end and would start recalculating until it reliased I was on Wards Road and then the display would 'snap' to the correct road. With EGNOS/WAAS & V 2.9 the display always shows me on Wards Road after the turn regardless of which mode the i3 is set to. 8)

Clearly there is no right / better choice between EGNOS and Normal mode. It's down to user preference / experience, otherwise we'd all agree....

you wont get an exact position from a budget gps...spend thousands and you probably will.....peeps lets not be robots and rely on the i3..its there to help our common sense..

When I use my handheld Etrex Legend out walking I virtually never get any differential corrections from the EGNOS sat. I know the aerial and chipset is different but does anyone know if the i3 is that much better? And is the i3 sensitive enough to get a good signal without a clear view of the southern sky, ie driving north along a road?

Its a shame we can't see more information on what satellites the i3 is using.

HMS Nottingham was probably using gps which i'm sure cost millions, and look what happened to that!!!

How can you guys be sure that EGNOS is actually working on your i3? Does it show a satellite status screen with "3D Differential fix" or are you just presuming that because you have switched it on, that it will have an EGNOS fix?

I am asking this because EGNOS doesn't seem to work on my Quest at the moment, although it used to work about a year ago.

Skippy, I think I asked a similar question on this for the same reasons but for the last week, and I tried again since seeing your post I have been getting a full lock (solid bar with D) on Sat 33 and a hollow bar on Sat 37 on both the Quest and 60c so maybe 33 is fully operational and now they are working on 37.

After reading this topic the first question that popped in to my head was how do we know that EGNOS is being received by our i3s? As far as I know there is no way of telling whether the unit is receiving the compensated signals or not. I believe that it is still being tested - the following was taken from their website:

EGNOS Planning is that the system will start initial operations in July 2005. By early 2006, when operational stability is expected to be reached, the EGNOS open service will be declared formally available. In early 2007, the EGNOS Safety-of Life Service will be declared available following the certification process.

The use of EGNOS SIS until announcement of system Availability for non-safety of life service should normally provide users with excellent accuracy performance, but interruptions in EGNOS signal broadcast from one or several GEO satellite cannot be excluded.


Apologies if this information has been produced elsewhere on the forum.

With EGNOS fully functional they claim an accuracy of 2M, as opposed to 15-20M without. I need to read further to determine whether there can be "blackspots" in EGNOS reception and whether the Garmin can revert to normal mode if this happens or whether it temporarily loses signal lock - may explain differing results from different people.

on a garmin 60c handheld you could see if you were receiving sat number 35 (i think) which was the extra sat you needed for egnos. as it was it wasnt always active.....unfortunetly the i3 cant give you this info so you really dont know whether the sat's working or not...

I have just been outside with my 60c and an i3 both with waas enabled.The 60c had a full lock on sat 33 and a partial one on sat 37 and an accuracy reading of 7 feet.. the i3 showed no change to the normal display what so ever so I can see no way of telling if there is indeed any correction taking place at any given time on the i3 ..

Idea There is one solution which is to connect the i3 onto a laptop with nRoute.
You will see without doubt if the i3 is in a differential mode !

I have sent an email to Garmin asking if there is anyway of telling if the i3 is receiving EGNOS, and also if they know the current operational status and whether losing the signal with EGNOS enabled would cause a temporary loss of signal or whether the unit reverts to manual mode. If I get a reply I'll post it here.

Well for EGNOS there are Navigation Land Earth Stations which simulate a satelite in addition to 3 geostationary satelites. Only thing is this is in Newlyn, so all those in Cornwall will be sorted for a signal.
