|
|
As the title states, is the all new V4 mount a step in the right direction. The reason I ask this question is concern for the long term durability of this foldaway mount. I got to thinking that every-time you stop your vehicle and leave it you are going to have to detach the TomTom from the windscreen if you don't want to run the risk of having it stolen. I have just returned from a weeks holiday and on average I left the vehicle 6 times each day. How long is the mount assembly going to last if you keep pulling and twisting it up to half a dozen times a day? With the existing mount I only move it when the Windscreen needs a clean or I'm not going to be using the TomTom for some time. |

This is something I was thinking about as well.
Live in London, and I don't leave anything attached to the windscreen unless I have to. But looking at the thing, it doesn't appear as robust as present mount or the alternatives you can buy. _________________ Triumph Tbird 1700. And now a Bonnie T100. |

The way Tomtom mounts are going they have just got worse on each new model !!
The old Tomtom go mounts were very good! the X20 series mounts are rubbish in my opinion
I suggest you look at a brodit clip mount when used with a mini move clip they slide off very easily |

You don't 'have to' detach the ONE complete with mount, you can take the ONE itself and leave the mount attached to the screen just as you could with previous mounts.
The ONE and mount are two parts with the mount being designed to fold against the ONe to encourage you to take it with you. But you don't have to. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Well that's encouraging news then, but as others have said each successive model appears to get flimsier and flimsier. I still have the GO300 and the mount on that is awesome, I could hang the Christmas turkey from that without any problems.
Another point - what is wrong with the audio on the current ONE models that it needs redesigning - again the audio on the 300 is almost CD quality. |

Nothing wrong but it now has a bigger speaker, some users found it a little quite in noisy environments such as vans, sports cars etc.
The clear intention with this mount is to discourage users from plumbing them in as permanent fixtures and with that objective in mind I think they've done a very good job. But it is fiddly to attach to the window as a whole unit and quite fiddly to attach device to mount when the mount is affixed first.
I haven't bothered with the supplied mounts for some years now, I always favour a Brodit or Carcomm cradle. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hmm! I have looked at the Brodit mount but I am one of those people that never do anything to deface a cars interior and the Brodit looks as though it has to be attached permantly either to your dash board or similar place or glued to the window permantly - I much prefer to use a sucker that can be removed completley when not in use - a system I employ with my GO300 |

Brodit's ProClips 'clip' on and don't require any permanent installation nor do they require holes to be drilled into your dash. That is the essence and the beauty of the whole system!

Most of the Brodit Pro Clips secure into gaps within the cars trim, they offer a decent secure mounting platform to which you secure the actual holder.
If you want to sell the car you can either leave the mount in the vehicle, as the new owner could use it for their Nav unit or mobile phone or simply remove the mount leaving no trace that it was fitted to the vehicle at all - Mike |

I'll have a look at my dash but not convinced as the Golf uses "slush fit" plastics which are soft and therefore easily marked. I could always just sit it in the tray on top of the dash which I have done with my 300 sat on it's cradle before today.
To be honest I'm still trying to decide whether to change my TomTom at all. It has worked flawlessly for the last three years but on a recent holiday to Bath it seemed to have a right fit on it. "Jane" was all over the place a number of times firstly recalculating again and again as the device seem to lose direction or know where it was completely, then told me to turn around where possible then turn right immediately followed by turn left etc. Once it had settled down and found the route it was fine, but this happened on a number of days and made us feel we couldn't rely on it. |

Those reviews are 5yrs old so it's inevitable I guess that some links may die. An impossible job to ensure they're all valid as time marches on _________________ Darren Griffin |

My current fave is Carcomm's x20 cradle attached to a Brodit mount. I've never had a bad product from either of them. _________________ Darren Griffin |

The good thing about brodit I think they use a 3D glue solution which is easily just removed |
