A North Yorkshire mobile safety camera operator was shocked when he recorded two boy racers on camera. On November 30 last year they were driving at 144mph on the A19 south of Middlesbrough.

He said he was "utterly astounded by the speed of the vehicles" - one, a Ford Focus RS driven by 21 year old Daniel Scott Richardson and the other, a Silver Mitsubishi Lancer Evo driven by 26 year old James Burrows.

They both pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Northallerton Magistrates' Court and were given suspended jail sentences and three-year driving bans.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "Today's sentence sends a clear message as to how seriously the criminal justice system takes such appalling driving. The evidence captured by the safety camera shows both vehicles travelling in close proximity at extremely high speed. Any error, no matter how minor, could have been catastrophic for the two drivers, their passengers and other road users.
