TomTom To Integrate What3Words System

Article by: Darren Griffin

TomTom announced yesterday that it is partnering with UK startup What3words and adopting their geocoding system that uses just three words to help travelers find their way to very precise points on earth.

What3words divides the entire planet into 57 trillion 3m x 3m squares, assigning each square a random three-word address. For example, if you want to find your way to a specific place in the Gobi desert, What3words may tell you that its address is “departed.rumbled.awaiting.” Move a few meters to the left, and the three-word address will change.

It's a superbly simple system and allows you to easily pass on a location where traditional postcodes aren't an option and Lat/Lon too complex and confusing.

TomTom will be offering what3words integration to TomTom consumer and automotive customers in the second half of this year.

Brilliant news, I've used it for ages, it is slowly getting better on the navigation side, destinations are so much easier to use.

Brilliant.
Where can I start using it for test and familiarization purposes?
When will it get to my GO LIVE 5200?

IPAQ H2210 1993.... GO LIVE 1005 Europe 2011, 1005 Camper 2015, 5200 WFi 2016 and TT still can't get metric speed limit info right in the UK. 70mph is NOT 115kmh. It is 113 as my old IPAQ knew so well!

I only heard about what3words last week when it was mentioned in LRO (Land Rover Owner) magazine. So far, it looks interesting. Thumbs Up

You can use it via its website and phone apps.

I suspect that TomTom may possibly add support to MyDrive.
