The estimated 700,000 French drivers who are uninsured are now liable to be caught by France's new generation of speed cameras.
The speed cameras monitor the traffic as normal, but when they detect a motorist speeding or jumping a red light, a cross check on their registration number is carried out with a national vehicle insurance database.
First offenders will incur a €400 fine, but they will receive a whopping bill for €7,500 if they get caught twice.

A lost opportunity.
Why only check the few that speed or jump a red light and not every vehicle, chances are that these drivers either use false plates and or register the vehicle in a fake name with fake address, therefore the fine can't be enforced.

As far as I am aware, the French system insures the driver, as is common in other European countries.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213) has an infuriating built-in SatNav that does not accept proper POIs.

I think you will find that UK motor insurance insures the person and the vehicle which is why you you have a named and other drivers and the named driver is the polcy holder and if the insurer finds one of the "other" drivers is in fact the main driver your cover may be at risk.
It will also explain that with some policies the policy holder is insured to drive other vehicles.
I would agree that cameras should have their use extended to anpr to find unisured, untaxed/unlicensed and illegal number plated vehicles and issue immediate fines or summones by post. If it is wrong argue your case in court.
I would also suggest that cameras set up to trap motorists e.g. mobile ones would be better used as red light cameras to catch those who seem to think it's optional to stop at a red light.
Any fake number plates, names or addresses could be added to the police anpr data base to be stopped on the road and the cars taken and crushed.

ANPR cameras already do the above except they cannot identify the driver. However if the vehicle has false plates then obviously they cannot catch the offender. An illegally plated vehicle just means that the number plate does not comply with current regulations, i.e. using cursive writing but the vehicle can still be identified.

You say that they can do this sort of thing, which I do not dispute, but do they actually make use of the information to bring about prosecutions? That is the main cut and thrust behind the French cameras. It's not about what they can do, but what they do do. (dah-dah dah dah)[/b]

To my very pleasant surprise, I don't believe that they do.
I have always taxed my car for 12 months at a time. However, last August, funds were tight, so I opted to only get 6 months and planned to renew in February.
I completely forgot and was driving my car between south London and Luton on a regular basis , sometimes through town, sometimes around the M25 but always using the M1 for at least six weeks before I realised my error and corrected it. We even took a trip to see friends in Somerset, so that's the M3 & A303 also.
I was dreading the arrival of our postman for the next month or two, but nothing more sinister than the usual bills dropped though our letter box.
Phew!
I dread to think how many cameras I must have passed through during those six weeks.
The flip side is that I recently parked in a private car park for about 10 minutes without permission and recieved a letter through the post within a week!

Again, I was lucky.
The letter was a "We have your number, don't park here again" shot across my bows. Which I think is a fair and reasonable approach.
But I would have disputed/ignored it had it been a fine.
