A point-to-point speed camera system has been activated on the A713 in Polnessan, Ayrshire.

The average speed cameras, which measure speed across distance have been positioned on a 40mph stretch of road known to be an accident black-spot.

Over the last three years there has been 8 collisions on the road which involved injuries - including two serious and one which ended in a fatality.

The cameras come as a result of local action - a councillor said that he was approached by people concerned about the speeding through the area.

Average speed cameras work by using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) which records the vehicle's number plate at each camera position.

Using the distance between positions, the average speed can be calculated by the time taken to travel between two cameras.
