Speed Cameras Mobile Phone Net 5000 From Speeding Driver
Article by: rob brady Date: 7 Jul 2015
A 52 year old driver from Bexhill, Sussex triggered a speed camera in Battle on September 21, 2013 and a red light camera in Worthing the following day.
But the man claimed that he was not in the area and his Volkswagen's number plate must have been cloned. He said that this had also happened previously whilst driving in London and Buckinghamshire.
Trying to convince Sussex Police of the cloning, Gary Chapman fitted new number plates to his car that looked different to the ones snapped by the cameras.
When police checked his mobile phone records they found he was in both areas at the time of the incidents. He had also used his bank cards at nearby petrol station.
Following his recent appearance at Lewes Crown Court, Chapman was handed a six-month suspended prison sentence and given 200 hours of community service.
Additionally he was fined £3,500 fine and told to pay £1,200 costs and £80 victim surcharge.
A police spokesman said: "Chapman wanted to avoid getting the six points for the driving offences as they would have taken him up to the 12-point limit and he could have been banned. This case shows how trying to lie your way out of trouble can cost you far more than if you accept what you have done and take your punishment."
