A man who threw a smoke grenade at a speed camera van has been sentenced following a guilty plea at York Crown Court.
Jake Sarup, 22, admitted throwing the lit smoke bomb from the back seat of a Vauxhall Corsa on the A64 whilst travelling through the North Yorkshire village of Sherburn - it activated and hit the back of the safety camera van.
A traffic officer, who was present at the sentencing, commented: "North Yorkshire Police fully supports the prosecution of Sarup. To throw a lit smoke grenade out of a moving vehicle, onto the busy A64 carriageway, was both irresponsible and dangerous."
He added: "It could have resulted not only a major collision due to the reduction in visibility on the road, but also in damage to property or injury to any other person nearby."
Sarup was given a 12-month community order, with 120 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £500 in costs and £60 victim surcharge.
Throwing a smoke bomb at a camera van? How stupid is that on the getting caught front. I bet they had some nice video of the offence. I wonder if they also posted selfies of them doing it on utube as well.
